Distance proved too much for US native Diane, 50, and Australian-based Peter, 57, when they were first together back in the late ‘80s, and it has defeated them once again. The couple, who hadn’t seen each other since they broke up 28 years ago, fell in love for a second time on Seven’s Back With The Ex and even walked away engaged, but things fell apart a few months later.
Diane, who hails from North Carolina, wasn’t expecting Peter to propose during their Paris trip. “I was very surprised by Peter’s proposal,” Diane tells WHO. “Being in Paris with Peter was extremely romantic. All I wanted was for Peter to propose so that I knew he was deeply committed to me and me to him.”
Unfortunately, the distance between North Carolina and Bowral in New South Wales was the nail in the coffin for the relationship. “I thought Peter was the man I would be spending my life with as husband and wife,” says Diane. “Because Peter and I have parents and children in our respective countries, the distance became a problem and a deal breaker for me. I was deeply saddened when things ultimately did not work out.”
After filming finished, Peter travelled back to the US to visit Diane. “Peter spent several weeks with me as we continued learning about each other and planning what our future would look like together,” she says.
But, now that they have decided to go their separate ways, the pair are no longer in contact. “I am only in contact with Peter with regards to the filming,” Diane says. “He has been giving me updates as to when promotional information has occurred and when the show has been airing. Once the show comes to a completion Peter and I will no longer be in contact.”
While it’s devastating to hear of Peter and Diane’s failed relationship, the other three couples didn’t have much luck either. While Lauren told Erik that she couldn’t move forward in their relationship in the last episode of Back With The Ex, Jeremy and Meg and Kate and Cam left the series together, with hopes to continue their relationships in the real world.
The end of the final episode revealed that Jeremy and Meg weren’t able to make it work and had since split, while Kate and Cam were doing well and had moved in together. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for them either as Cam moved to Sydney to join the army but the pair remains great friends.
