As Lisa Oldfield makes her way into I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, the star may battle it out in the jungle, but it appears she’s been facing a far greater one as she confirms to WHO that she has been seeing a coach help her quit the consumption of alcohol.
What’s the one thing you’re really scared of?
Oh I know we won’t see any of them in there anyway but I’m terrified of clowns. I’m mad for animals – even creepy crawlies and spiders.
What about the food? Anything you just refuse to eat?!
No, I’m not a big eater! I can survive off a few bananas a day. I used to get my calories from alcohol. And I stopped drinking – I made a conscious decision to become sober, because I was drinking too much last year. I promised my family that I’d just stop drinking. My kids said to me “We like you more when you don’t drink.” So I was like that’s all you need to say.
How long have you been sober?
I’ve been sober for 45 days, I’ve actually been seeing a sober coach every two weeks and it’s not just sort of something someone says ‘Hey I’m not going to drink anymore”, it’s something that I’m committed to doing long-term. So I’m really interested in chatting to Fiona O’Loughlin – her story was so sad, but I also didn’t want to get to the point where Fiona did. And it’s stories like her that inspire me.
How often were you drinking?
It was only at night but I was knocking off a bottle of wine every night. And a lot of the times I was doing it by myself. It was no longer social drinking it became a habit and it wasn’t health social drinking any more. So I thought you know I’m going to get fit again, I’ve already lost 8 kilos.
That’s incredible. How have you done that?
Just stopped drinking. I’m not a big eater anyway so like when you don’t drink you make healthier food choices and I took up running again. I’m feeling fit I don’t have to worry about detoxing when I go into the jungle because I don’t drink coffee or alcohol anymore. I do occasionally have the odd cigarette, but I don’t have a packet a day – I’m could go without.
How has David (her husband) helped you get sober?
Well, David’s not a really big drinker; he pretty much only has the occasional glass of wine. He went sober probably about 18 months ago, again with the health choice thing. He’s been very supportive. And I haven’t become some kind of killjoy I don’t mind if people drink in front of me. My problem always was I could always go without a drink but if I had one drink I’d finish the bottle. The trick is just not having a drink.
Congratulations to the star!
