Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Usher, Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder … With a line-up like that you would imagine festival organisers could charge a fortune for tickets, but the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 is like no other live music event. For one thing, the crowd haven’t bought their tickets, they’ve earned them.
WHAT IS IT?
Marking the centenary of South African leader Nelson Mandela’s birth, Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 will feature all those world-renowned artists, as well as a stack of other performers and guest presenters – including Oprah Winfrey, who will deliver a special keynote address remembering Nelson Mandela and his legacy.
Held at South Africa’s FNB Stadium in Johannesburg this Sunday, Dec. 2, the event is also part of a campaign by international advocacy organisation Global Citizen to alleviate extreme poverty. For this money-can’t-buy event, concertgoers won their tickets by doing good actions, such as “taking action and demanding world leaders make major investments to end extreme poverty and take a stand for women and girls with a focus on health and nutrition, education, gender equality, water and sanitation, and the criminalisation of poverty.”
Global Citizen was founded by Australians Hugh Evans (who was Young Australian of the Year in 2004), Simon Moss and Wei Soo.
