The former cop who was a part of the search for Maddie McCann until 2011, is convinced that she was taken from her parent’s hotel room in Portugal by a child sex gang and that she could still be alive.

The Sun reports that David Edgar, the former top cop, is convinced that she is being held against her will: “She is most likely being held captive, possibly in an underground cellar or dungeon and could emerge at any time.”

The missing person’s case of Maddie McCann is one of the most high-profile in the world after the young three-year-old mysteriously disappeared in May 2007.

Just last week, the Home Office granted an extra £150,000 ($264,000) to Scotland Yard after funds had run out, guaranteeing the search will continue until early 2019.

Met Police are reportedly chasing up two of lines of inquiry and have told Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry they are “hopeful of getting a result.”

Edgar says that these lines of inquiry are most likely in connection to their theory that this was paedophile related kidnapping.

Mr Edgar added: “She could literally be anywhere in the world but my hunch is that she is in Portugal. The chance that she may have been smuggled out of the country without being detected is highly unlikely,

“Unless a body of there is hope.”
