He may still take his washing home to mum, but the Married at First Sight star is adamant he sorts his own opinions when it comes to choosing a life partner.

Talk about the mother-in-law from hell! Married at First Sight fans were left agog when Patrick’s mum Ruby – who we also watched do the 34-year-old’s laundry for him – left it perfectly clear she wasn’t happy with his bride Charlene.

“She’s loud, she’s outspoken and a bit crazy as well,” Ruby said of her new daughter-in-law.

“I think she is too outgoing for Patrick. I don’t think it will work because of that. If I happen not to like her, I think I can turn it around and say, ‘Patrick, you choose – it’s her or me.’ And I’m pretty sure Patrick will choose me.”

But while his mum is certain she will have the upper hand when it comes to being the most important woman in Patrick’s life, the newlywed former party boy tells WHO he’s not the mamma’s boy the program makes him out to be.

“My mum’s opinion, it does really matter to me but if I’ve got my mind made up about something I just stick to my guns and just go for it,” Patrick says. “I like to have my mum’s approval but sometimes she’s a little bit opinionated and I’ve copped that my whole life.”

Despite it looking like he’s not moved out of his mother’s house, Patrick says that he actually lived with his father from the age of 10, after his parent’s marriage broke down.

“Dad was everything to me,” he says of the man he nursed for the final years before he passed away at the age of 84.

“I’d always be on the phone to him, ‘Hey Dad what do you think about this girl? What do you reckon we should do about this?’ I was very open and honest with him and I did that because he was a bit older – he had me when he was 50 – and I guess I thought I don’t know if he’s going to be here forever.”

While Ruby may have been giving Charlene, 33, death stares from across the room during their televised wedding, Patrick says even if his mum isn’t immediately on board with his new wife, he’s positive his dad would be happy with the woman the experts matched him with.

“He would have loved her,” Patrick smiles. “Whenever I took partners or potential partners around to Dad he would just talk and talk and talk. And that’s something that Charlene is very good at!”
