As controversial Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland – a documentary centred on the child abuse allegations that dogged the late pop star – gets set to air in Australia latter this week, millions of American viewers have already watched the first of the two part HBO program.

While there has been a public outcry at the horrific allegations alleged in the documentary, millions of the late ‘King of Pop’s die-hard fans are defending the singer.

Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed described them as “the Islamic State of fandom”.

“One can only compare them to religious fanatics really,” Reed told the New York Times.

Australian-born choreographer Wade Robson and former child star James Safechuck broke their silence in the documentary that aired at Sundance Film Festival last month.

And fans have been left outraged.
