Nick Philippoussis, the father of Australian Tennis champion Mark Philippoussis has suffered a stroke while in the cell of a US jail.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald,  the Australian tennis coach had a massive stroke and may not face trial on charges he sexually assaulted two young girls he trained in California.

The newspaper reports that a San Diego judge was told on January 4, that the 68-year-old is catatonic following a stroke and has been hospitalised for weeks. Doctors confirmed he is not expected to recover.

Philippoussis was arrested in July 2017 for allegedly sexually abusing the two nine-year-old girls, however, due to his fragile health condition, Judge Michael Washington agreed to lift the A$11.7m bail and set a hearing in June.
