In the wake of the Australian fruit sabotage saga, NSW Police have held a press conference to address the rising concerns of the public and give an update on the investigations.
Detective superintendent Danny Doherty form the robbery and serious crime squad state crime command confirmed that NSW police are considering their investigations into a number of cases of fruit contamination in NSW.
In a media conference held on Tuesday afternoon (you can watch the full video below), he urged the public to contact authorities if they come across any contaminated fruit as the consequences are “dire”.
Detective superintendent confirmed that the offence carries a 10 year jail punishment. “This includes the original threats from QLD, and other incidents that have been reported recently across NSW.”
It was confirmed that they have received reports of a banana and apple in the Sydney area, and are investigating more than 20 incidents across NSW, between Tweedheads and Albury, including one found in a northern NSW school. Any incident, original or copy cat, carry the jail sentence.
Despite investigations, the motive is still unclear but the detective had a clear message to the perpetrator: “You are causing economic loss to an industry, you are causing hysteria.”
