The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are currently taking some time off from royal duties, meaning they will miss the US president’s two-day NATO summit in London, which will include a drinks reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening hosted by Queen Elizabeth.

Despite Harry and Meghan’s absence, other royals – including Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall – will be in attendance.

Although Kate is expected to attend the palace party with President Trump, her husband Prince William is currently in the Middle East on a four-day solo tour of Kuwait and Oman.

Trump and First Lady Melania previously travelled to the UK in June for a state visit. Although Prince Harry joined other members of the royal family for a palace exhibit at Buckingham Palace with the President and First Lady, Meghan was currently on maternity leave having given birth to the couple’s son, Archie the month before.

Last month, following the fallout from their documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, palace insiders revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are feeling increasingly isolated from the royal family.

In the tell-all documentary, which was released in October to coincide with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal tour of South Africa, Prince Harry confirmed the rumours that he and brother Prince William have grown apart.

Those close to the couple say they are struggling with ongoing feelings of isolation from the rest of the royal family. And while Meghan’s admission during the documentary that she has struggled with life as a new mum in the glare of the media has “opened eyes” about the couple’s emotional distress, the relationship between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royal family is increasingly frosty.

“There hasn’t been this complete 180,” a source tells People. “Nothing has changed. They don’t speak, no one is checking in, no one is texting.”
