It’s long been expected that Princess Mary will take on the role of Queen of Denmark – but it looks like that time will come sooner, rather than later.

Princess Mary has officially been given permission to step in for Queen Margrethe II for royal duties.

The Danish royal family confirmed the momentous news via social media with a picture of Princess Mary alongside husband Prince Frederick, Queen Margrethe and the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen.

“As regent, the Crown Princess will, from now on, be able to attend to the Queen’s duties as head of state when the Queen and the Crown Prince are prevented from doing so, for example during a stay abroad,” a statement by the royal family read.

“The Crown Princess signed the necessary declaration about acting in conformity with the constitution in the presence of the Queen, his royal highness the Crown Prince and the government,” the statement continued.

Princess Mary’s husband, Prince Frederik is set to ascend the throne upon his 79-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe’s death, promoting Australian-born Mary to Queen.

Princess Mary – formerly known as Mary Donaldson – was just an ordinary girl from Tasmania when she met Prince Frederik at Sydney’s Slip inn pub during the 2000 Olympics.

They spent the first year of their relationship in a long-distance romance, with Frederik making secret trips to Australia. A year later Mary moved to Denmark.

Just two years later in 2003, the couple announced their engagement, walking down the aisle on May 14, 2004, at Copenhagen Cathedral in the nation’s capital.

The rest, as they say, is history.
