What have you asked Santa for this year?
I’m very low-maintenance. I’m asking for just a pair of secateurs. I’ve become a gardener this year – I adore my garden, I spend a lot of time there – and Mum has these terrific secateurs that can cut through a tree just about, so I’ve asked for that. Mum’s like, “Really? Is that it?” Oh, and a new garden hose.

How are you spending Christmas?
This year we’ll have a country Christmas, which is the usual flies, heat and a swim in the pool in the afternoon. We have a hot ham and turkey – 38 degrees, but it’ll be nice. Small and intimate with family.

Has there been a standout Carols moment over the years?
One year my sister was home from London with her kids. They were much younger then and seeing the joy on their face to meet Mickey Mouse … they were blown away. It’s always lovely to share these moments with family.

What’s your favourite Christmas memory?
I think I spin this one out every year but it’s a genuinely good memory. When I was probably 8 or 9, I got all these small presents and I was trying not to be an ungrateful child but I was thinking, “Is this it?” Then Dad said to me, “Can you just go out to the garage, I need something.” And I went out and there was a saddle on one of his workhouse things and it was just my dream. It was my first beautiful leather saddle, which I still have, I don’t know if I fit in to it anymore. That was the first truly big surprise of my life and just the most beautiful present I’ve ever received.

What is your favourite Christmas song?
My favourite Christmas songs are from Bing Crosby. I love all those old hits and I have a playlist that I will put on when I’m getting organised around the house, so all those old, New York rich, Christmas songs plus a bit of Michael Buble thrown in; a little bit of Olivia Newton John thrown in there, too.

Any New Year’s resolutions?
I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. Generally, I just want to go into 2019 with a good attitude and a fresh outlook, and just to enjoy my life and keep working hard and try to get some balance in there. I say that every year. But I just want to make the most of everything.
