Sammy J: “We struck something of a nerve there”

The ABC satirist reflects on his personal and professional highlights from 2018
ABC

The comedian, 35, looks back on a year of sketches in Sammy J: The Twelve J’s of Christmas (airs Thurs., Dec. 13 at 9.30pm; ABC Comedy) and tells us about the last …

… time he took a break from following politics

For a week in the school holidays I managed to switch off. That was just after Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership spill so I think the whole nation switched off as well.

… news coverage that made him gasp out loud

When the Brexit vote came through. To be watching something that could change history was intense. And I think we all gasped a lot at the start of Donald Trump’s presidency; now it’s more of a sigh.

… time he was surprised by the response one of his sketches had

The Nauru generation one. The show goes out on Facebook at 5pm every Thursday, and I remember we posted that and checked back two hours later and the number of notifications and messages had just gone through the roof. I realised we struck something of a nerve there. It was getting a lot of attention, and I was nervous that might have been the one where we jumped the shark because a comedy show with no jokes is a bold move.

… series he binged

I’m making my way through The Crown. I love something that feels like you’re still learning while you’re getting all the buzz of a good soap opera.

… time a politician did something he couldn’t make fun of

When Emma Husar announced she wasn’t standing again because of scuttlebutt about her private life and did a very tearful interview on TV. With those personal things, you think, “There’s a human behind it all.”

… road trip he took

Driving to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. It’s an annual pilgrimage for Australian comedians.
