I think we can all agree, the real love affair that transpired during the last season of The Bachelorette had less to do with who scored the final rose (no offense Stu Laundy) and more about rekindling Australia’s fondness for star Sophie Monk.
She’s been around since her star turn in Popstars in 1999 as everyone’s favourite Bardot member— She could sing! She was Marilyn at Movie World! She was a walking soundbite! She then spent some time in the wilderness, with, let’s face it, some forgettable roles and regrettable romances.
When in 2009 there was talk she was teaming up with Curb Your Enthusiasm producers for a reality/comedy show (tentatively called “Bigger Than Paris”) I was sceptical. Now? I’m in. Monk it made for reality TV.
She’s not only proven it with her Bachelorette turn, but her social media is basically an audition. And she’s acing it. With a built in supporting cast of game-for-anything BFF Oscar Gordon, scene-stealing parents Andrew and Sandi, and look-alike sisters Angelique and Lucy, Monk manages to be self-effacing without a hint of humble brag.
Whether recreating a Destiny’s Child video with her family, getting spray tan in her mouth or tripping while walking off a yacht, she’s a perfect cocktail of comic timing and glamourous escapism. I’d tune in. Would you?
