Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in ‘Star Wars’, dies at 74

Peter Mayhew, best known for bringing Wookiee Chewbacca to life in Star Wars, has passed away. The beloved actor, who underwent spinal surgery in July in an effort to improve his mobility, was 74 at the time of his death.

The London native’s family released a statement on his Twitter page this morning, writing, “The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away. He left us the evening of April 30, 2019, with his family by his side in his North Texas home,” the statement continued.

Mayhew portrayed Chewbacca in George Lucas’s original Star Wars trilogy, as well as Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. The actor later returned to the role for The Force Awakens.

“He fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more,” his family said in the statement.

Following the announcement, friend and co-star Mark Hammill paid tribute to the late star. 

“He was the gentlest of giants-A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly-I’m grateful for the memories we shared & I’m a better man for just having known him,” Hammil, who starred alongside Mayew in George Lucas’ saga-launching Star Wars in 1977.

Joonas Suotamo, who took over for Mayhew in a few instalments, also shared that he was deeply saddened by the news. 

“Peter’s guidance and kindness have been invaluable gifts which warmed my spirit and prepared me for this journey. I aspire to make Peter proud and bring Star Wars fans the Chewie they know and love.”

Mayhew is survived by his wife, Angie, and their three children.
