He’s the new coach and says he has the most to prove. His enthusiasm, though sure is infectious – just ask any one of the contestants working with him for a shot at Finals glory.
SALLY SKELTON
Pre-Voice: Sally is back this year after losing out in a finals berth in the 2017 battle round when she was mentored by Kelly but missed out to BoJesse Pigram.
How Joe has helped: Sally decided to go with Joe this year and already her decision is paying off. He is working with her to develop a unique, soulful voice.
The Result: “It’s a big leap to take, to go back again, and to get back to where you want to be, it’s a weird feeling,” says Sally. But she feels she’s on the right track with Joe. “He’s very knowledgeable but he always brings it back to the roots of being here as musicians, to do what we love and entertain people.”
BEN SEKALI
Pre-Voice: A youth worker with indigenous and foster care kids, Ben has been singing with his church since he was little. Now he wants to bring his gift to a wider audience.
How Joe has helped: Ben and Joe bonded immediately through their shared faith and love of singing in church. Joe is trying to get Ben to show more of his personality.
The Result: The other judges criticised Ben for his reticence to show excitement when he made it through to the Finals round. But with Joe’s help, he is learning to showcase more of his personality – and vulnerability – to the audience.
AYDAN CALAFIORE
Pre-Voice: A former contestant on Young Talent Time, Ayden is no stranger to the spotlight, but now he recently quit school to focus on singing full-time.
How Joe has Helped: Like Ayden, Joe started singing professionally at a young age. He’s been able to impart valuable advice.
The Result: “Joe understands where I’m coming from in a way that Delta can’t because he went through the ‘teenage boy star’ phase in his life,’ says Aydan, who chose Joe over the Aussie superstar. “Joe said I reminded him of himself when he was younger – it was tough, but I think I made the right choice.”
HOMEGROWN
Pre-Voice: These siblings from Far North Queensland have been singing from a young age, but never to this many people, or this far from home.
How Joe has helped: Known for their sweet, country twang, the group is being pushed out of their comfort zone by Joe, who urges them to experiment with new styles to become more well-rounded artists.
The Result: The siblings knew they wanted Joe as their mentor predominantly because he has succeeded in the business with his own siblings. “Luckily, we had four-chair turns, but Joe’s had the same experience with his siblings in a band, and he’s been great during mentoring,” says Katelyn.
