The Golden Globes is fast approaching us and by now, every nominee and presenter has got the memo. The 300 powerful women who founded the Time’s Up movement have asked nominees and presenters and others to wear black on the red carpet in solidarity of women standing up to sexual harassment and abuse.
As one of the founders, former Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria said in her statement on the red carpet blackout, “For years we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colours and beautiful faces and our glamour. This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”
This has led to a meltdown for the fashion industry, with many designers having to pay for seamstresses who are working around the clock to complete their new outfits in the required color. We can confirm Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Salma Hayek, Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon are all wearing black but since it’s only encouraged and all are welcome, there will be colour on the carpet too.
Zac Posen has suggested ‘bedazzling’ some of his looks so the nominees toe the line with the ‘wear black’ request but don’t lose that glamorous Hollywood feel on the carpet and nobody will be wearing a Handmaids outfit or a sack, so expect many to exploit the loopholes with more creative dresses, hair, makeup and jewels. It’s not limited to the men, either, not that tuxedos are usually any other color.
But that doesn’t mean everyone will be wearing brights, either. Stylist Ilaria Urbinati previously confirmed that her clients Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tom Hiddleston and Armie Hammer would be taking a stand alongside the female stars. “Because everyone keeps asking me… YES, the men WILL be standing in solidarity with women on this wearing-all-black movement to protest against gender inequality at this year’s Golden Globes,” Urbanati wrote on social media. “At least ALL MY GUYS will be. Safe to say this may not be the right time to choose to be the odd man out here… just sayin…”
