July 2009: Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner meet on the set of Valentine's Day
So what actually happened with Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner? It all starts on the set of a romantic comedy of course! The 19-year-old singer and the 18-year-old Twilight star are cast as a loved-up high school couple in the romantic comedy, Valentine's Day. Although the film was only released in 2010, pictures of the stars, who were playing Felicia and Willy, making out on set quickly went viral.
September 2009: The Notorious VMAs Altercation
Just a few short months after filming together, Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift reunited at the 2009 MTV VMAs, however, things didn't go quite to plan. Shortly after Lautner presented Swift with best female video for You Belong With Me, Kanye West stormed the stage and interrupted her speech.
"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!" he stated in the bizarre moment.
October 2009: Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner go public with their relationship
Shortly after rumours of their relationship begin to swirl, the couple begins to *really* fuel any romance rumours. They begin to step out publically on a number of occasions including a hockey game in LA, on a date night at Ruth's Chris Steak House and Lautner's even spotted at a few of Swift's shows.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show the same month, Taylor refuses to confirm-nor-deny her relationship status. Bringing attention to the photos of Lautner and Swift at the hockey game, Ellen asked: "Is that part of the movie when you all go to some kind of game together...Is that part of the movie too?"
"I really like hockey a lot and it turns out so does he," was all Swift replied.
November 2009: Taylor Swift's SNL monologue
During her first time hosting Saturday Night Live, Swift publically addressed her relationship with Lautner for the first time. Of course, in true Taylor fashion, her monologue consisted of a song, which included the lyric: "If you're wondering if I might be dating the werewolf from Twilight." She then mouthed, "Hi Taylor" to the camera and blew a kiss before finishing the line: "I'm not going to comment on that in my monologue."
Shortly after the episode, Swift made some sweet remarks about her experience with Lautner on the set of Valentine's Day, sharing that they had "gotten really close " in an interview with InStyle.
Lautner also provided a comment for the interview, telling the publication: "Taylor is hilarious. It was definitely not hard to play her love interest."

December 2009: Taylor Lautner's SNL monologue
So what did Taylor Lautner say about Taylor Swift? Well lucky for fans, 2009 saw a lot of Taylor's host Saturday Night Live, with Lautner using his own monologue to address his new relationship.
Although it was nothing too juicy, the star used part of his skit to mention how close he and Swift had become and how he wished he had reacted when Kanye interrupted Swift's VMA speech.
December 2009: Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner break up
Proving once and for all that we can't have nice things, People break the news towards the end of December that the pair have broken up.
"It was never a big deal to begin with," a source close to Swift told the publication. "The media made way more out of it than it i...They went out on a few dates and realized this was just not going anywhere."
"They became good friends and then went out a few times, but he lives in L.A. and she lives in Nashville and their busy schedules kept it from becoming more than it was," a source close to Lautner also added.
October 2010: Taylor Swift releases a song about her relationship with Taylor Lautner
Almost a year later, Swift released the second single from her album Speak Now. Fans quickly put the facts together and believe the song, titled Back to December, is about her breakup with Lautner.
Why did fans think the song was about Lautner? Well, they split in December and the song includes the lyrics: You gave me roses and I left them there to die / So this is me swallowin’ my pride / Standin’ in front of you sayin’ I’m sorry for that night / And I go back to December all the time.”

The song clearly highlights Swift's regret over how things ended and also has lyrics about Lautners, "tan skin," and "sweet smile" as well as their "beautiful times."
“It’s almost word-for-word. It is a song and a conversation that needed to happen because I don’t want to hurt people. If you unintentionally do so, you’ve got to make that better,” Swift told USA Today at the time. “I feel so comfortable singing about these details and these relationships and listing times, dates, details, names. But when it comes to an interview and they say, ‘Are you dating this person?’ or ‘Did you date this person?’ or ‘What’s your current relationship status?’ I suddenly feel very shy.”
Whilst Taylor has used many of her songs to highlight her not-so-great exes, it's clear her relationship with Lautner was something special.
Shortly after Speak Now was released, Swift told Glamour that even now, after their break-up, they are on good terms. "He's one of my best friends. He's wonderful, and we'll always be close. I'm so thankful for that," she told the publication.
August 2011: Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift reunite

August 2016: Taylor Lautner speaks about his relationship with Taylor Swift
So what did Taylor Lautner say about Taylor Swift? The actor remained pretty tight-lipped over the years but did broach the topic during the promo rounds for Scream Queens.
"It was a good time," was all he had to say when asked about the relationship. "It was a fun few months there."
Fellow Scream Queens co-star Lea Michele pried a few more answers out of him the following day during a Facebook Live.
“Didn’t she write a song about you?” the Glee star asked him.
“That’s what she does,” he replied. “She writes songs.”
But Michele wasn't letting him get out of answering the question! Pushed harder, she asked, “I think it’s something about a sweater and a hat, right? … It’s like, your hat in December!”
Lautner gave in and said, “It’s called Back to December.”

February 2023: Taylor Lautner and his wife discuss the Kanye and Taylor drama
In the premiere episode of the podcast, The Squeeze, which Lautner hosts alongside his wife (also named Taylor), the actor revisited the VMA stage-storming.
"I was unaware that the Kanye thing was not a skit,” he recalled. “I presented the award to her, so I gave her the award [and] I took five steps back and was standing five feet behind her. In the middle of giving her thank you speech, Kanye jumps up onto the stage.”
“I can barely hear it. I can’t see them. I’m just assuming that this whole thing was a practised and rehearsed skit because why else would Kanye West be jumping up on the stage, interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense. He jumped off, she finished [and] the second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No, that wasn’t good.’”

May 2023: Taylor Lautner addresses the re-recording of Speak Now
Lautner - who is now married to a Swiftie himself, has continued to share his comfort with the re-recording of Speak Now. And why would he care? Unlike John Mayor, the song that was written over ten years about him was a sweet ode to what-could-of-been and as a now happily married man, the relationship is in the past.
Appearing on Today, Lautner revealed that he feels "safe" about any potential new tracks that may be released alongside the album and even went so far as to joke that he was "praying for John" Mayer.
He also took to TikTok to poke fun at John Mayer - filming himself taking a knee to the song Dear John.
July 2023: Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner reunite
During Taylor's Eras concert in Kansas City, Missouri, she invited three VIPs from her original Speak Now era onstage for the debut of her new music video for I Can See You, one of the songs "From the Vault."
Joey King and Presley Cash, who both appeared in Taylor's Mean video back in the day appeared on stage - but it was the third guest who the crowd literally lost their minds over.
Taylor's ex, Taylor Lautner, of course!
“He was a very positive force in my life when I was making the Speak Now album, and I want to say he did every single stunt that you saw in that music video,” Swift told the crowd about her time with Lautner in 2009. “He and his wife have become some of my closest friends, and it’s very convenient because we all share the same first name.”
“I respect you so much," replied Lautner. "Not just for the singer you are, the songwriter, the performer — but truly for the human you are. You are gracious, humble, kind and I’m honoured to know you.”
