Taylor told Ellen DeGeneres that the song 'Forever & Always' was a sarcastic reference to her and Joe's relationship. Some of lyrics include the verse:
Did I say something way too honest, made you run and hide
Like a scared little boy
I looked into your eyes
Thought I knew you for a minute, now I'm not so sure"
John Mayer and Taylor Swift Duets
Before we dive into the politics of who wrote what lyrics and the secret meanings hidden within every break-up song, let's revisit the times that John Mayer and Taylor Swift sang together.
March 2009 - The First Tweet of Many
In a (now deleted) tweet, John Mayer wrote:
"Waking up to this song idea that won't leave my head. 3 days straight now. That means it's good enough to finish," he wrote. "It's called 'Half of My Heart' and I want to sing it with Taylor Swift. She would make a killer 'Nicks' in contrast to my 'Petty' of a song."
Taylor was only 19 at the time, and her second studio album Fearless had been released only months prior. Having an established star like John Mayer publicly Tweet about wanting to do a duet with Taylor was understandably a big deal.
"I freaked out when I heard, because I've been such a big fan of John for such a long time," she told Elle in a subsequent interview. "I'm really excited about just the idea that he would even mention me in his Twitter!"
May 2009 - Surprise Guest
Taylor's Fearless tour was well underway when she was due to perform at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Her fans were pumped to be a part of Taylor's first nationwide tour - but little did they know they were about to get more for their money!
Taylor brought John Mayer on stage as a surprise guest. This would have been a big deal in itself, but in light of John's tweet, fans were extra excited. John and Taylor sang John's most well known hit 'Your Body Is A Wonderland' as well as a song written by Taylor, 'White Horse'

June 2009: 'Half of My Heart' released
Roughly two months after John publicly reached out to the young singer via Twitter, he releases the single 'Half of My Heart' featuring Taylor Swift. They performed live together in December at The Jingle Ball in New York.

You can certainly see chemistry between the couple as they belt out the song that very well could have been what brought them together. However, by October 2010, there would definitely be some bad blood between the pair!

The salient facts are these:
- A message to your lover telling them that you no longer feel anything for them is known as a 'Dear John' letter.
- John Mayer's first name ... is John.
Some of the Dear John lyrics are as follows:
Don't you think nineteen is too young
To be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so?
I should've known"
Maybe it's you and your sick need to give love then take it away
And you'll add my name to your long list of traitors who don't understand
And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said "run as fast as you can"

Time for some more lyrical analysis!
And Winter runs a bit too small"
And none of them know what they’re runnin’ from
Was it just too far to fall?
For a little paper doll"
Someone’s gonna paint you another sky"

Team Taylor or Team John?
Team Taylor, a thousand times over.
First of all, John, you must have known that getting involved someone who was barely 20 years old was going to be troublesome. Secondly, when you want to do a duet with Taylor she's the Stevie Nicks to your Tom Petty, but when she writes a song about how she felt played by you then all of a sudden "it's kind of cheap songwriting." Then, on Taylor's 27th birthday, you tweeted this salty little number and did the ol dirty-delete until so many people called you out on it that you were forced to retweet yourself.
After this entire saga, all we can say is that Taylor and John are much better off apart!
