There are celebrities who like to have their wedding details splashed all over the news – and then there’s Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden.
It’s been revealed that the Irish actress (Mary Queen of Scots, Little Women) and Scottish actor (Slow Horses) have secretly wed in Scotland.
The couple tied the knot at the Edinburgh Central Registrar’s Office in a low-key ceremony only attended by close family and friends, The Irish Independent has reported, citing the Register of Scottish Civil Marriages records.
Talk about keeping it on the down-low – the wedding took place earlier this month but the news has only just become public, with wedding guests reportedly “sworn to secrecy.”
Ronan, 30, and Lowden, 34, are a notoriously private couple.
They have not shared any photographs to social media from their big day and over the years they’ve remained relatively tight-lipped in interviews when asked about their relationship.
But Lowden did spark engagement rumours in July 2023 when he posted an Instagram picture of Ronan’s hand sporting what looked very much like an engagement ring .
Ronan was also seen wearing the ring at the Louis Vuitton spring-summer 2024 womenswear show.
Now it seems fan speculation about that ring being an engagement rock was right on the money!
What have Jack Lowden and Saoirse Ronan said about each other?
Lowden did give some insight into their relationship when discussing a 2024 film they co-produced,The Outrun, which stars Ronan as a woman returning to her homeland after a long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.
“That woman is a force of nature, on and off screen, and utterly fearless and a brilliant leader as well,” a clearly admiring Lowden gushed to iNews.
“My first love is actors. And when you’re given a Ferrari like her, it’s all about how you make everything good for the Ferrari to show off. Don’t make a Ferrari do what a Renault Clio does. When there’s someone like that, you just have to facilitate them and you will get gold.
“And My God, did we.”
He jokingly added: “Sometimes she gives a better performance than me off camera and you’re a bit like, ‘Can you, erm, not?'”
Harper’s Bazaar later asked Ronan what she thought of her partner likening her to an expensive racing car – and it seems she didn’t mind at all!
“When a person you respect as much as I do him says that, it means more than anyone else’s opinion,” she said.
Ronan is so private she doesn’t even have Instagram or Twitter, but she does make the occasional appearance on Lowden’s Instagram.
On July 1, 2024, he shared a romantic picture with his arms wrapped around her at Glastonbury Festival, with many fans speculating they were watching Coldplay.
“How much do I love this couple?” one follower wrote.
“This photo made my day,” wrote another.
Said a third: “Put this photo in the Louvre!”
Who is Jack Lowden?
Jack Lowden is also an actor. He was born in Essex, England, but grew up in the small rural Scottish village of Oxton.
He joined the Scottish Youth Theatre in Edinburgh when he was 10 years old and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
He’s had roles across film, theatre and TV, including Dunkirk (2018), Mary, Queen of Scots (2018) , Benediction (2022) and Slow Horses (2022).
How did Jack Lowden and Saoirse Ronan meet?
The actors met on the set of Mary, Queen of Scots, which was released in late 2018.
Ronan played the title role (with Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I) and Lowden played her husband, Lord Darnley.
While they tried to keep their burgeoning romance private, in December 2018 Page Six published an article speculating they were a couple, noting they looked “very close” at an early screening of Mary, Queen of Scots.
When did Jack Lowden and Saoirse Ronan go public with their relationship?
In early 2019, Lowden was pressed to confirm he was dating Ronan, but he kept mum. “Oh, I’m not going to talk about that,” he told ES Magazine when asked. “I don’t like talking about that side of life.”
Slowly, they simply began making a handful of public appearances together. They were even spotted Down Under in January 2022 attending the Australian Open tennis!
