It makes sense dramaturgically.

If you’ve found yourself with a ludicrously capacious hole in your heart after watching the finale of Succession – wondering what on earth you’re going to do next – you wouldn’t be the only one.

With a whopping 1.6 billion views on TikTok, Succession had us all enthralled for the entirety of its four seasons before it aired its finale and left us desperately scrolling through video edits trying to fill the void.

But, we’re seemingly in luck because there’s another TV series that the good people of TikTok have put forward as the next best thing; a dark comedy called Barry.

While it may not be the familiar Roy family drama we all know and love, Barry has been dubbed a “masterpiece” by critics, saying it “fully realises the themes of grief, redemption, the consequences of violence, and identity”.

So, if you’re keen to add it to your watch list and (reluctantly) move on from Succession, here’s everything you need to know about Barry, including where you can watch it in Australia.

What is Barry about?

The Emmy-winning dark comedy series follows the titular character Barry Berkman, a depressed, low-level hitman from the Midwest who is looking for a way out.

When a job takes him to Los Angeles, Barry follows his target into an acting class and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the theatre scene.

With a new lease on life, Barry sets out to start anew as an actor, but his criminal past won’t let him walk away that easily.

“Thorny, complex and darkly hilarious, Barry is one of those shows you were told was one thing, but was actually something almost entirely different,” Wenlei Ma wrote for news.com.au.

Who is cast in Barry?

Bill Hader takes on the role of Barry Berkman, a former Marine-turned-assassin who tries to give up contract killing for a career as an actor.

Joining him are Stephen Root as Monroe Fuches, Barry’s uncle and handler, and Henry Winkler as Gene Cousineau, a failed actor who runs an acting class in Los Angeles.

Sarah Goldberg also stars as Sally Reed, an acting student who wants fortune, fame, and glory, and Anthony Carrigan as Noho Hank, a member of the Chechen mafia in Los Angeles.
