Attention all Shondaland fans! The Ton has some good news – Bridgerton season 5 is officially on it’s way.
Netflix has confirmed that the upcoming season is currently in production with Shonda Rhimes, of course, at the helm. Much to the surprise of fans, season 5 will follow Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and her budding romance with Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza).
The announcement was posted to Netflix’s social media accounts along with a teaser clip of the two leading ladies in character.
Showrunner Jess Brownell teased to Tudum that: “If there’s anything really specific about this season, it is the yearning. It’s big-time yearning,” she says. “It’s going to be a season about queer joy. It is not going to be a season about queer trauma. … We’re having so much fun!”

What is the plot for Bridgerton season 5?
For the first time, Bridgerton will be centering it’s love story on a queer romance between widower Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling.
According to Netflix, the season will pick up “two years after losing her beloved husband John” when Francesca is grappling with her grief, before deciding “to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons”. According to the books, Francesca falls in love with John’s cousin, Michael, in the sixth book of the series but Netflix has decided to gender-swap the character for their on-screen adaptation.
It will follow Francesca as she navigates the tragic loss of her husband, as well as the deep connection that she forms with Michaela, who has recently returned to London, that catches the Bridgerton sibling off guard.
Many fans of the book series have been quick to voice their shock at the fact that Eloise’s story isn’t getting it’s time in the spotlight yet. While others are praising the Netflix gods for giving them a queer-focused storyline.
Who is in the cast for Bridgerton season 5?
So far, all we know about season 5’s cast is that Francesca will be played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela by Masali Baduza.
While not confirmed, we can also expect many of Bridgeton’s characters to return such as Nicola Coughlan, Jonathan Bailey, Luke Thompson, Yerin Ha, Claudia Jessie, Simone Ashley, Luke Newton, Ruth Gemmell, Florence Hunt, Golda Rosheuvel, Ruby Barker, Adjoa Andoh, Will Tilston, Jessica Madsen and Polly Walker.
When will Bridgerton season 5 release?
If we’re taking past timelines into account, it’s likely that we won’t see the season release until late 2027 or early 2028.
A two-year gap between seasons is typical for the series, however, we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait!
