Billy Ray Cyrus has reportedly filed for divorce from Australian singer Firerose after seven months of marriage.
According to documents obtained by People, the 62-year-old filed to dissolve his marriage on May 22, 2024, allegedly citing irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct as the reason for their divorce.
News of the couple’s split comes seven months after they announced to social media that they had tied the knot.
“10/10/23 will always be a beautiful, joyous day that our two souls united in holy matrimony. It was the most perfect, ethereal celebration of love we could have ever imagined,” Billy Ray wrote to Instagram alongside a collection of photos from the day.
“For both of us to hear the preacher say, ‘Billy Ray and Firerose Cyrus… I now pronounce you husband and wife,’ that was the sacred moment our new forever began.”
The pair were thought to be first romantically linked in August 2022, with engagement rumours emerging in September when Billy was featured on one of her tracks.
Later that month, the couple confirmed their engagement, with Billy Ray sharing a series of selfies on Instagram of Firerose and her engagement ring.
Their history however goes as far back as Billy’s days on the set of the hit Disney channel show Hannah Montana, Firerose working onset as an extra when she was a teenager and Billy playing Miley’s onscreen dad.
“We actually met 10 years ago on the set of Hannah Montana….and Billy Ray’s been a phenomenal supporter of my music ever since,” Firerose told Ryan Seacrest in August 2021.
“Billy confided in me a lot of what was going on in his life,” Firerose told People, alluding to his marital strife. “I was just the best friend I could possibly be, supporting him.”
“All of the sudden, the life that I’ve always known as a touring artist didn’t exist anymore,” explained Cyrus when speaking on the pandemic.
“A moment of so much change. And at the same time, Firerose, who had been such a light of positivity, such a best friend. And then when we began sharing the music, it just evolved more into, as musical soulmates, to soulmates, happy, pure love that to me, I didn’t know could exist. Again, we’re musicians, first and foremost, both of us. And we found this harmony, and this rhythm, this melody to life.”
According to a report from Main Street Nashville, the performer previously said that her “purpose on earth” was to touch people through music.
“I always believed that my purpose on earth was fulfilled by music,” she added on her website.
“And helping people up with a song I wrote gives everything so much meaning. I write from a place in my soul that’s unexplainable and I’m incredibly grateful for this gift that allows me to touch people so profoundly.
While many fans shared their support for the happy couple, the Cyrus clan has remained silent on social media, fuelling rumours that Billy had fallen out with his children in the wake of his divorce from his wife of almost 30 years, Tish Cyrus.
In April 2022, Miley and Billy even unfollowed each other on Instagram in a very public sign of an ongoing feud however, Billy was quick to dispute the claims during his interview with People.
“Everyone knew that that relationship was over a long time ago,” he said. “Everybody’s turning the page. It’s been a lot, but everyone knew that it was time for a change.”
