It seems like the ethereal fairy-esque glamour of the 2024 red carpet may have only just graced our for you pages, but the Costume Institute is already counting down the days until the A-list debut of the 2025 Met Gala theme.
While it may still be a few days until our favourite celebs return to the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the team behind fashion’s biggest night have slowly started to reveal the details for this year’s fundraiser.
What is the 2025 Met Gala theme?
Mirroring the Costume Institute’s next exhibition, the 2025 Met Gala theme is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s novel Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the Met has shared that the upcoming exhibition and fundraiser will “present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy” and will explore the important role that fashion has had and continues to play in the representing Black identities.
“Fashion and dress have been used in a contest of power and aesthetics for Black people from the time of enslavement to the present,” Miller shared, adding, “The history of Black dandyism illustrates how Black people have transformed from being enslaved and stylised as luxury items, acquired like any other signifier of wealth and status, to autonomous, self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters.”
In January 2025, the 2025 Met Gala revealed its official dress code for the theme – “Tailored for you.” The dress code is “a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear—from specific silhouettes to various fabrics and accessories—that is purposefully designed to both provide guidance and invite creative interpretation,” the Met said in a press release.
Who are the 2025 Met Gala co-chairs?
For the first time in the Met Gala’s history, the 2025 co-chairing committee will consist exclusively of men.
Joining the fundraiser alongside Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, musicians A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams, Los Angeles Lakers star Lebron James, and playwright Colman Domingo have been announced as the 2025 Met Gala co-chairs.
Speaking on his appointment, Lewis Hamilton wrote to Instagram, “This theme speaks to me deeply… Growing up as the only Black kid on the track, so often that pressure [to conform] got to me. Expressing myself creatively was and still is my freedom from that conformity. For Black people across the diaspora, fashion is self-preservation.”
“Fashion is resilience, and I can’t wait to further explore and amplify our underrepresented voices.”
When is the 2025 Met Gala?
In keeping with tradition, the 2025 Met Gala will take place on the first Monday of May (aka May 5, 2025) at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
