Nicky Buckley has long been a household name in Australian television, known for her warmth and charm as co-host of Sale of the Century and as a presenter on shows like Good Morning Australia and The Today Show. But in the mid-1990s, the beloved TV star found herself at the centre of an unexpected controversy when she became the first woman on Australian television to work while visibly pregnant, sporting figure-hugging gowns that showcased her baby bump.
The backlash was swift and intense, with headlines questioning her professionalism and viewers demanding her removal from TV screens. Now, nearly three decades later, Buckley is revisiting this chapter of her life on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!—sharing her experience and reflecting on how it shaped her career and resilience.

In the latest episode of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Nicky Buckley got candid about the wave of criticism she faced in the 1990s for continuing to work while pregnant. At the time, Buckley was co-hosting Sale of the Century and became the first woman in Australian television history to appear on screen in body-hugging maternity outfits.
“They were saying that it was disgusting. That I should be taken off until I’ve had the baby,” Buckley recalled. “Then the magazines all ran articles. The newspapers, the radio stations. A Current Affair did a story on it. And I’d be on the cover of the newspaper with the headline ‘Is this woman too big for television?’ Channel Nine news said they had fax machines jammed with requests from people to get me off the air.”
Despite the negativity, Buckley worked up until a week before giving birth and remained remarkably unfazed by the scrutiny. “I must have had some really good hormones going around because I was like, ‘Whatever,’” she laughed. Reflecting on that time now, she admits, “If I had that much hate today, I don’t know how I’d cope.”

Joining I’m a Celebrity wasn’t just a chance to revisit her iconic career—it was also a deeply personal decision. Buckley is using her platform to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, a cause close to her heart after losing her mother, Joan, to the disease 20 years ago.
“I’m doing [the show] for Mum.” Buckley shared with New Idea. After undergoing a preventative hysterectomy herself, she hopes to inspire others to prioritize their health.
“I’m also keen to show my boys that Mum is totally putting herself out of her comfort zone – and that’s OK,” she added. “I want [them to see] that you can get through anything and come out the other side, even if you are super scared. It’s also OK to be scared.”
