Rising to fame as Sex and the City icon Carrie Bradshaw and the cunning Ferris Bueller, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick were undoubtedly one of the 1990s’ most popular it-couples.

After nearly three decades as a couple, their Hollywood romance is still going strong. While the couple tends to keep their romance largely out of the public eye, Sarah and Matthew have offered a handful of glimpses into their love story over the years, with both actors speaking candidly about the evolution of their marriage.

Who is Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband?

Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star Matthew Broderick since May 1997.

Tying the knot in New York’s Angel Orensanz Synagogue on May 19, 1997, the couple celebrated their romance in a fairly intimate ceremony by celebrity standards, with 100 of their nearest and dearest filling the venue. They invited 100 of their closest friends and family to a party that then turned into a surprise ceremony.

After 20 years as a couple, Sarah opened up on her marriage with Matthew, sharing an insight into their relationship dynamic to The Telegraph.

“We’ve been together for 20 years, and you have good days, you have decent days, and you have bad days. That’s a marriage. That’s a relationship. That’s a friendship even. Relationships outside of marriage run the same course,” she shared.

“If you’re in it for the long haul and you want meaningful relationships, you are going to go through lots of different periods.”

Celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in May 2017, Sarah shared a heartwarming portrait of the couple to Instagram, writing, “It flew by baby. Good golly I love you.”

In a full-circle moment, the Hollywood couple returned to the Broadway stage in February 2020 for their new show Plaza Suite.

With the production paused as a result of the pandemic, the couple returned to the theatre stage in January at London’s Savoy Theatre.

First crossing paths in November 1991 at the Naked Angels Theatre Company, founded by Sarah’s brothers Toby and Pippin, the pair went on to star together in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times before opening night, Sarah described her new beau as “the funniest fellow I’ve met in my whole life.”

“He’s so bright, so handsome. I think he’s the most handsome man I’ve seen in my life and he inspires me. I’m mad for him.”

Praising his partner both on and off stage, Matthew told The Telegraph in January 2024, “Her way of working is very compatible for me. I find her very easy to work with, and I’m very impressed by her. I think she’s tremendously good.”

Matthew also revealed his first impression of his wife of almost 30 years, telling the publication, “The first time I met her, I was very struck by her. She was very special. Somebody you wanted to look at.”

Does Sarah Jessica Parker have children?

Five years after their big day, Sarah and Matthew welcomed their first child, son James Wilkie, on October 28, 2002.

In 2009, the couple welcomed their two twin daughters, Marion and Tabitha, via surrogate on June 22.

SJP has kept her children largely out of the public eye; however, they have appeared at rare occasions on red carpets.

We were also blessed with a Call Her Daddy interview on June 18 where SJP opened up about wanting kids and a career.

“There’s no right time because that’s what makes it so confusing for yourself and for so many women. You think, ‘Okay, I’ll just accomplish this and then it’ll be a better time.’ And then maybe you are, you do it, you accomplish that and you think, ‘But wait a second. But because of those accomplishments, now this opportunity exists and I’m not quite ready because I know I won’t be able to be the same professional person.’

“So I would say first of all, there’s not a right time, so you have to kind of keep looking at your life with honesty and also, it’s really nice to have somebody to talk about it to, with whom you can speak about it.”

Sarah Jessica Parker and her daughters

So if your mum is Sarah Jessica Parker, playing the Carrie Bradshaw, surely you would have your kids raiding your wardrobe. Right?

Wrong. Carrie shared with Call Her Daddy, “You know what, so many people rightfully ask, but they just don’t…they like clothing and I’ll get a text a couple times a month asking can they purchase something.

“But they mostly buy their clothes used. Almost entirely. Which I think is pretty common now with girls, young women their age, they’ll be 16 later this month. They don’t tend to be trendy, they don’t move toward that,” she shared.

“They know they don’t have a budget. They don’t have money with the exception of what they’ve earned. And one of them is a little bit better at earning than the other, who’s pretty, she saves pretty well, they both had jobs last summer.”

And of course with their Mum as one of the fashion icons of the century!? SJP spoke on whether the girls ask for fashion advice.

“They’ll ask me, ‘What do you think of that?’ Or ‘What about this dress for this occasion?’ Maybe they’ll ask about shoes. My shoes don’t fit them. It’s really a tragedy.

“Like what I have is not necessarily of interest. They’ve never seen a show. So they haven’t an idea about what is available to them yet. But I do give, I give them stuff of mine all the time.”
