Broke and struggling to provide for her two daughters, separated mum Sam (Sheridan Smith) makes matters worse by racking up huge online gambling debts in Cleaning Up (watch the trailer below).
She’s never going to make ends meet with the income from her office-cleaning job, so she comes up with a scheme to eavesdrop on a stockbroker who’s engaging in insider trading. If he can make a quick buck, why can’t she? Roping in a friend, Sam embarks on a mission to solve all her problems using the information she procures and an online trading app.
Sound like a recipe for disaster? You betcha, but if you can get past how infuriating Sam is – why can’t she just make better decisions? – this is a fun ride with the underlying threat that things can’t possibly be so easy.
Smith does a brilliant job of making chancer Sam someone you want to see succeed, while the series is pure escapism – pour yourself a wine and enjoy the ride. (Starts Fri., Mar. 15 at 8.30pm; Seven) 3 stars
