Every year, when a new season of Farmer Wants A Wife rolls around, there’s fresh backlash against the new group of farmers, with some fans claiming they aren’t ‘real farmers’. This year, it’s no different.
There are five farmers on the show in 2026: Farmer Alex, Farmer Dylan, Farmer Zac, Farmer Jason and Farmer Jarrad.
Farmer Alex is a mushroom and cattle farmer from Queensland and recently shared a day-in-the-life video showing him enjoying a morning stretch and coffee with his parents, spending some time at the beach, playing tennis, and practising the piano.
While it looks like an enviable example of the kind of work/life balance we’d kill for, viewers were quick to jump into the comment section to suggest that if Alex had the time to do all of these things, he couldn’t possibly be a real farmer – an accusation the 28-year-old had a very cheeky response to when WHO asked him about it.
A day in the life of Farmer Alex
“As much as work is a big part of the farm, we like to make sure we keep a good work life balance if we can manage it here,” he says in the video.
“So, we try to give time to each other and ourselves. We’ll head down to the beach, go for a walk, if we’ve also got some time too, I’ll go play some tennis, have a swack, and once the sun’s down, I’ll play a bit of piano and collect my thoughts, reground myself.”
He added, “If I get to do all those things in a day on the farm, that’s a pretty sensational day.”
Alex responds to fan accusations of not being a real farmer
Among the sceptical comments left on the post was one reading, “Just came here to say that most farmers don’t get to do coffee, lunch, swim, play tennis, play piano and relax in a hammock… in a month, let alone a day…”
Speaking to WHO, Farmer Alex responded to the allegations with a healthy dose of humour.
“That’s true,” he told us. “I’m not a real farmer. I’m a paid actor. The people that own the farm that I work at pay me to act as a farmer. I don’t do any work.”
When asked what his friends think of him being on the show, he said with a laugh, “Well, they don’t mind, because I’m acting, so it’s just part of the job.”
More seriously, he added, “They were fine with it. There was definitely a moment with them where they were like, ‘Damn, we’re gonna see a lot of sides of you, man.’ And yeah, it’s all just part of the fun now.”
Is Farmer Alex a nepo baby?
Another comment on the post implied that Alex isn’t a farmer, but a “nepo baby” – even though it’s very common for a farm to be run by a family and passed down through the generations.
However, some defended Farmer Alex, with one person responding, “Is it his farm or his parents’, though? If the latter, it explains how he could take a few weeks off to film the show, too. Half the farmers they have on don’t seem to be sole owners of the farms we see on the show.”
“There have been other specialty farmers on the show in the past,” another said. “Not all farmers grow crops or animals.”
While it might seem like an easy gig from that video, Alex told Seven that the work actually keeps him on the farm “seven days a week”, meaning there’s not a lot of time for dating.
