She’s the Golden Bachelor frontrunner who has won a legion of fans thanks to her joyfulness and vulnerability on TV – but there was a time when Sunny Long asked her doctors if she was dying.
At the time she was knee-deep in work – having moved to Australia from Hong Kong with her then-partner, an Aussie.
Depsite having no family history of breast cancer and being diligent about checking her breasts in the shower, 2017 brought Sunny news that she never expected – she had a three-centimetre suspicious cell growing in her left breast.
Sunny’s cancer scare was a ‘wake up call’
“I didn’t have any work and life balance. I was focusing on generating financial stability for my grown-up kids, and also my retirement, because I don’t have anyone here, and I’m the only one that can look after myself,” Sunny explained in an interview with Mamamia.
She continued, “I was punching away on my laptop, even as I was lying down on the theatre table [in hospital] because I had to prepare data for my Chairman… and they know that I’m about to have the operation.
“I even asked my doctors, am I dying now? Do I have some time? I was treating it like a business deal.”
The moment served as a wake up call for the mum – who ended up tending her resignation.
Who is Sunny on Golden Bachelor?
These days, Sunny’s tests are clear and she has regular breast screens – with Golden Bachelor viewers seeing some of her personal story shown on TV.
The 58-year-old- who is mum to two influencer daughters, Chloe and Penny – split with her former partner after more than a decade together.
“I am glad he found happiness. He has a girlfriend, and I’m just happy for him,” Sunny told Mamamia. “I just tried to look at the time we had — rather than sad memories — and he showed me a beautiful life.”
Now Sunny is CEO of her own tech business, meaning she’s busy once again. She’s also a passionate golf player who loves introducing people to the sport.
Sunny thought Golden Bachelor opportunity was a ‘scam’
“You shouldn’t have any regrets,” Sunny said in one video shared to Instagram. “Life is like a marathon. Some people will start it very early and then they’re just… boom… you know, successful. But eventually life is all about an inner journey for each one of us. No one can have the same journey.”
But her journey to the Golden Bachelor almost didn’t happen
“She was actually approached to go on the show. At first, I thought it was a scam and didn’t believe it – but once I realised it was real, I told her she had to do it,” her daughter Chloe told Chattr. “I mean, what a fun opportunity! It also felt like the universe was reminding her of the amazing things that can happen once you let go of the wrong relationship.”
Does Sunny win The Golden Bachelor?
It’s been reported that Sunny does indeed make it to the final two on the Golden Bachelor – where she enjoyed romantic dates with widowed father Bear Myrden.
“It sounds strange, but I felt like I’d known him forever,” Sunny previously told TVWeek of Bear.

But there is speculation that Bear is now single – whatever plays out on TV screens over the coming days.
The rumours led host Sam Armytage to weigh in with a spoiler on the show finale.
“He’s been a wonderful inaugural Golden Bachelor and he finds love,” she told 9Entertainment.
“Watch this space. The next few weeks are massive.”
