How to watch the Spider-Man movies in order now that the Multiverse is here

Time is a construct anyway.

While we don’t deal in spoilers here, we’ll happily let you in on a rumour you’re probably already aware of if you’re a fan of Spider-Man or the Marvel Cinematic Universe – things are about to get confusing, timeline wise.

The end of 2021 brought with it the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third instalment of the current iteration of Spider-Man.

If you have been living under a rock, this is the most-recent Spider-Man, the one that birthed Hollywood’s cutest couple, Tom Holland and Zendaya.

It’s the one that was included in the amalgamation of characters, plots, and worlds when Avengers came to an end in one of the biggest blockbusters of our time.

But for all the success of the Avengers franchise, No Way Home has actually swung right past – it’s now the eighth highest-grossing movie in global box office history.

It’s made upwards of an eye-watering $1.53 billion in global box office taking, overtaking both The Avengers and its sequel, Age of Ultron, which made $1.518 and $1.4 billion respectively across their entire releases. And No Way Home hasn’t even finished its release yet.

But why, we ask?

Well, not only is Tom Holland a brilliant Spidey, and these films some of the best in the MCU franchise, the directors are pulling something off no one has dared before.

You see, Tom Holland is far from the only Spider-Man, and his remakes come only a few years after the last iteration of the superhero, starring Andrew Garfield.

And screenwriters Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna saw a great opportunity there: bringing back the villains that we’d seen in not only Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, but in Tobey Maguire’s mid-2000s version as well.

And as Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina began to confirm they’d be returning to the MCU in their roles as various Spider-Man villains, speculation ran wild across the fanbase.

Were Tobey and Andrew coming back, too?

We’re not going to spoil it for you, though. We’re just here to help you wrap your heads around the timelines, which are about to get complex.

While Disney have taken it upon themselves to reveal the true order of the endless stream of films in the MCU, Spider-Man steps outside it, given the original two series were produced respectively by Columbia Pictures and Sony.

So, the only way – we think? – is to watch them in order. Here’s how!
