You see one romantic comedy film, you’ve seen them all. At least that’s the joke in new Netflix movie Isn’t It Romantic (watch the trailer below).
The parody stars Rebel Wilson as unlucky-in-love architect Natalie, who, after suffering a nasty bump to her head, wakes up in a fantasy rom-com of her own in which every stereotype is accounted for. Unrealistically fantastic New York apartment? Tick. Gay best friend? Tick. Impromptu musical routine (below)? Tick.
Then there are the rival love interests: hunky client Blake (Liam Hemsworth) versus colleague/soul mate Josh (Adam Devine). Can Natalie, who draws attention to each trope as it appears for anyone not brought up on a diet of Julia Roberts’ movies, work out who she’s supposed to love in order to find her way back to the real world?
Not the cleverest satire there’s ever been, nor, thanks to Wilson’s trademark big-is-better delivery, the most subtle, Isn’t It Romantic is perfect for a Friday night on the couch. And beats watching The Devil Wears Prada once again. (On Netflix from Thu., Feb. 28) 3.5 stars
