In a video posted to his social media, Johnson said he was happy to announce a “reimagining” of the 2016 film.

“As you know, Hawaii means so much to my family and me, and the traditions of our ‘Ohana’ – or ‘Ainga’, as we say in Samoa [both meaning family] – were shaped by these incredible islands,” he began.

“The pacific islands and their cultures inspired a very special story, one that you all know very well. And that story is – drum roll, please… Moana! We are so excited and happy to announce that a live-action reimagining of Moana is in the works.”

In the video, which also featured Johnson’s youngest daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, the 50-year-old actor spoke about his family connection to the film.

“We found so much inspiration for Maui in the ‘mana’ and the presence of my late grandfather, the legendary high chief, Peter Maivia,” he said.

“He would walk in, light up a room, the energy, the tattoos, the hair, the bod… when you’re staring at a demi-god,” he riffed off his Moana solo.

“In a way, when I bring Maui to life, I’m doing it in the spirit of my grandfather.”

Moana actress, Auli’i Cravalho, also shared the news on instagram stating “this one has been whispered about for years”.

Moana has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses. Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way,” she wrote.

However, not everyone is excited about the news. Some perplexed fans are wondering why Disney is opting for live action over an animated sequel.

“I truly don’t get the point of this? Why not [an] animated sequel. [It is] A live action using the same cast of the same movie, so what’s the point? Couldn’t just give us [an] animated sequel,” one person tweeted.

“So they took an existing cast/animation… and made it… worse?” another said.

Others simply asked: “Why though?”

While Disney has no answers for these folks, a new generation of Moana fans are destined to emerge.
