The saga of Steven Avery isn’t over just yet.
Making A Murderer will be returning to screens, after Netflix announced on July 20 that it had commissioned new episodes of the documentary series.
The hit series—nominated for six Emmys—will pick up the story of convicted murderers Avery, 54, and his nephew and co-defendant, Brendan Dassey, 26, as they fight to overturn their life sentences for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
This next chapter will provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as, the emotional toll the process takes on all involved.
The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, as well as intimate access to the families and characters close to the case.
The original 10-episode series became a hit after premiering last December, captivating viewers as it tracked the story of Avery, wrongfully imprisoned for sexual assault for 18 years and then exonerated, only to be convicted two years later for the Halbach murder.
Netflix revealed it has ordered an unspecified number of additional episodes, which directors and creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have already begun working on.
“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series,” Ricciardi and Demos said in a joint statement.
“The viewers’ interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold.”
