Making a Murderer’s Steven Avery is getting married.
The 53-year-old subject of the popular Netflix docuseries is engaged to Las Vegas legal secretary Lynn Hartman, also 53.
His lawyer confirmed the news to Us Weekly in a statement the read: “Steven Avery’s engagement to Lynn is one bright spot in an otherwise unbelievably tragic and unfair life story,” Kathleen Zellner, who is handling Avery’s wrongful conviction case, said. “Cheers to both of them.”
Avery and Hartman, whose relationship began with letters and phone calls, have been dating for eight months but met for the first time last week.
“She’s going to be my future wife. We’ll be laughing forever,” Steven told the DailyMail on September 23. “I’m happy. She treats me decent, she loves me. She’s kind of spoiling me right now. I just want to be happy and enjoy my life. I think I did enough time.”
Avery has been engaged twice before and married once to Lori Mathiesen, who he shares four children with and divorced in 1988.
Avery was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2007 for the murder of Teresa Halbach and has been spending his sentence at Waupun Correctional Institute in Waupun, Wisconsin for 11 years.
