MasterChef fans ‘blindsided’ by Dot’s brutal elimination as viewers blame editing

I join the long queue of people who are absolutely gutted that Dot was just eliminated from MasterChef. She was a firm fan-favourite throughout the season, winning multiple challenges, and when I met her for a promo day before the show began, I leaned over to my colleague and whispered, “I reckon she’s the winner”.

She was bubbly and kind, and then, as soon as we gave her a cooking challenge (make avocado on toast in three minutes), she absolutely nailed it, all while calmly talking us through her process with that same friendly demeanour.

We even joked that she could have her own cooking show after the avocado challenge, and I truly had my bets firmly placed on her to take home the $250,000 first prize.

However, it wasn’t meant to be.

She was eliminated during Wednesday night’s episode after her river mint doughnuts sadly missed the mark with the judges, including guest judge Robert Irwin, with the native ingredient overpowering the dish.

Fans were quick to express their genuine heartbreak that the graphic designer had left the MasterChef kitchen, and even quicker to air their grievances on social media, with many saying they felt “blindsided” by her departure.

The edit that left viewers ‘blindsided’

Other than consistently performing well throughout the season, fans felt blindsided by Dot’s elimination due to the episode’s editing.

Many wrote online that they felt there was more of a focus on other contestants’ mishaps, particularly those of Luke and Petro, so despite it being highlighted that Dot was struggling during the challenge, her edit was comparatively better than the others.

“I love Dot. She was so camp and fabulous. So unruffled whilst cooking… I never saw it coming either, assumed it was Petro or Luke,” one fan wrote.

“Damn the editing, bruh. Thought Luke was going go. Dot was such a surprise, especially after how confident she was about her dish,” another said, while a third said her elimination came “straight out of left field”.

Bella’s return sparks more fan frustration

Another frustration highlighted online was that of the Comeback Cook this week, which allowed previously eliminated contestants a chance to fight for a spot back in the competition.

Bella ultimately won and was permitted back into the competition despite missing weeks’ worth of challenges, while others remained in the competition and had to fight to survive.

“Bella cooks one dish and is allowed back in and doesn’t have to cook in the challenge (not sure how this is fair to the existing contestants). And then Dot gets eliminated. This just seems wrong and doesn’t credit the more consistent cook at all,” one fan grumbled.

What’s next for Dot after her MasterChef elimination?

WHO understands Dot is now enjoying a long-overdue holiday, having missed her honeymoon after her wedding fell smack bang in the middle of filming. However, she did admit to us during that promo day back in April that she intends to keep watching the show until the end, often whipping up snacks inspired by each challenge.

“I feel like because obviously I will know what’s coming. I could kind of make some cheeky little snacks that might make an appearance later on in the episodes,” she said.

“You have to have the trio of snacks. I feel you’ve got to have something salty, something sweet and something like gummy.”

With a fan favourite now gone, and the competition rapidly approaching the pointy end, it’s fair to say that as viewers continue to watch the cooks grow throughout the challenges and get more invested, the tension is rising with the stakes.
