We’re still weeks away from knowing who will be crowned the winner of MasterChef Australia, but two contestants just hit the jackpot, as their winning dishes now head straight to Coles shelves. The cooks were challenged to make either an ice cream or a pie, and Pat and Hannah were victorious, with Hannah’s cheeseburger pie particularly revered by the judges for its uniqueness.
It’s something that many fans picked up on during Sunday night’s show and pushed against, explaining that cheeseburger pies have previously been stocked in Coles and the concept isn’t as “wild” as judge Poh said.
However, others stood up for Hannah, saying it was a smart move to pick a recipe that was a crowd-pleaser and one the Australian public could get on board with, especially since it was going to be available at one of the country’s largest supermarkets.
But there’s actually a very sweet reason behind why Hannah picked the flavour she did, with the contestant telling WHO the crucial detail in the challenge brief prompted her to run with the idea.

While the judges were delighted with Hannah’s pie choice, fans were divided on whether they thought her idea was worthy of the win, and calling out that it wasn’t that “revolutionary”.
“Coles had their own brand of cheeseburger pies four years ago. Not sure why the judges were acting like it was so revolutionary,” one fan grumbled, while another called it a “copycat” dish.
“My only problem with the cheeseburger pie is Four’N Twenty already did it. Would have loved a good supermarket pie with a new concept,” a third chimed in.
However, others believed she approached the challenge well.
“It is not an invention test. It’s a Coles challenge, and Four’N Twenty’s cheeseburger pie is just cheese with mince, not a ‘burger’,” one fan said.
“Supermarket pies fill an important role of being the fastest and easier method of going from thinking about pie to eating it,’ another said, while a third confirmed they definitely would like to eat the cheeseburger pie.
What prompted Hannah to make the oh-so controversial pie?
Hannah told WHO she decided to make the cheeseburger pie because the judges instructed them to make a “family pie”, so she immediately thought of something that her four young children would actually eat.
“I’ve always played around with cheeseburger flavours and, like, sausage rolls and pizzas and different things, just for a bit of fun – and the kids love it,” she told WHO. “As soon as I knew it was a pie challenge, I was like, ooh, I reckon I could try and make a pie taste like a cheeseburger as well.”
So that’s actually what she did, and it’s now available to buy in Coles stores from Monday across Australia.
Hannah recommends enjoying it with a “little side salad”, and reckons this one doesn’t need tomato sauce. Talk about controversial!
