EXCLUSIVE: Melanie C reveals which Spice Girl is like her sister and which one would ‘kill for you’

Melanie C spoke to WHO about the band and the dynamics within it.

You would think being a Spice Girl and having nine studio albums would be reason enough for her to kick off her sneakers, but Melanie C is working harder than ever. Not only is the 52-year-old returning as a coach on The Voice Australia later in the year, but she’s also just released her new album Sweat, which has done little to bat off those Spice Girl reunion rumours.

“I’d say that we’re probably talking more now than ever,” the singer told WHO.

“It’s so precious to us that we just want to do the right thing, and we all want to feel comfortable doing it.”

As the band’s most successful solo artist, selling over than 130 million records, her new album is inspired by her life as a teenager before the Spice Girls, drawing inspiration from the time she danced her way through the Spanish rave scene in the early ‘90s, with Sweat channelling the same raw energy of breakbeats and freedom.

Mel C’s Aussie love

But Sporty Spice is very much sticking to what we know and love her for, with the music video of the album’s title track showing her working out on a spin bike (while wearing heels) and repping Australian fitness clothing brand Bondi Active.

The English-born singer has spent a lot of time in Australia in recent years since she started dating model and scriptwriter Chris Dingwall in 2023, even joking that she’s picked up on some of his Aussie slang.

“It’s funny, my partner’s Australian, and he calls places joints, like, ‘that joint’ or ‘this joint’ and calling girls ‘chicks’. My daughter and I, we do laugh often at the little Australianisms that come out of his mouth.”

Sporty Spice set to tour Australia with new album

Melanie C is set to tour her new album across the country in November, with fans praying we might finally get a Spice Girls performance, with the band not once performing together in the country.

Surely, with a run of solo shows and the band’s hit song Wannabe turning 25 in July, this year we will finally get what we want (what we really, really want) and have a Spice Girl reunion on Australian soil.

“I hope so,” Melanie C teases when asked the question. “I love it here, and I always feel super welcome. It feels like a second home to me.”

Melanie C and her friendship with each Spice Girl

Despite the band being famously created by talent managers eager to form ‘the next big thing’, the bond between the women has transcended far beyond their unconventional meeting. Melanie C explains they’re all still very close despite each of them going on and pursuing their own passions after the band split in 2000, with each having their own unique friendships.

“It’s funny because we all have different relationships with each other,” she said.

“Myself and Geri, we used to spend a lot of time together, because I would do extra work with her choreography, we would spend the most time in the studio together, and we have a lot of mutual respect creatively.

“Em and I, we love hanging out together. She’s my closest friend within the band, she’s like a sister.

“With Victoria, she’s always there and always great for advice. We all respect what she’s achieved. And Melanie, well, she is probably the one who would definitely kill for you.”
