Michael Douglas has opened up about the deeply personal conversations he shared with his longtime collaborator and friend, Rob Reiner, regarding the challenges of parenting a child battling addiction.

Both men experienced those struggles firsthand; Michael’ son, Cameron, and Rob’s son, Nick, each faced prolonged battles with substance abuse. While Cameron, whom Douglas shares with ex-wife Diandra Luker, has since recovered and rebuilt his life, Reiner’s family story has taken a far more tragic turn.

Nick Reiner is now facing charges in connection with the deaths of his parents, a devastating outcome that casts new light on the private pressures Rob Reiner was carrying behind the scenes.

Rob and his wife, Michele Singer, were found murdered in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. Sources previously told TMZ that the couple was discovered by their daughter, Romy.

The source added that Romy told the police that her “dangerous” brother Nick had been living there and was “possibly behind the murders and should be considered a suspect.”

Romy told police Nick was not there when she arrived, however, he was finally located and arrested at approximately 9:15 PM Sunday.

Appearing in the CBS News special Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life, which aired on Sunday, December 21, the 81-year-old actor reflected on the private struggles Rob was facing behind the scenes and how their shared experiences as fathers created a bond.

“With this terrible tragedy, we’re realising how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” Michael said. “I also had a son who had drug issues. And I’m happy to say he’s overcome them and he’s living a prosperous life. But we talked a lot about that: What you can do as a parent, what you can’t do.”

Michael went on to praise Rob’s professionalism despite the weight of those challenges.

“So knowing with all of that going on behind the scenes, this was a man who always gave you his best,” added Michael, who starred in Rob’s films The American President (1995) and And So It Goes (2014).

Michael has previously spoken openly about his son Cameron’s struggles with addiction. Cameron, now 47, has been sober for several years and has discussed his recovery publicly.

In a 2019 interview with PEOPLE, Michael admitted just how difficult that period was for their family.

“There were moments when hope dwindled… I thought I was going to lose him,” he said at the time.

Cameron later shared how his father’s steady presence influenced his own recovery. Speaking to PEOPLE in May 2023, he said Douglas taught him to “lead by example” and emphasised the importance of simply showing up.

“I think when somebody is really struggling, to have love and support is crucial,” Cameron said. “Because at least for myself, there are some parts of my life that were so dark that I was maybe starting to lose hope for myself. Then having the love and support of people that you also love and respect, it was just critical for me.”
