Will Milly Alcock return to House of the Dragon?
Milly Alcock, who played a young Rhaenyra Targaryen, previously confirmed that she wouldn’t be returning in the form of flashback scenes. “No. It’s done,” she told Deadline following the first season.
She appeared in the first few episodes of season one, but the role was recast for an older actor, and Emma D’Arcy went on to continue Rhaenyra’s story.
“It changed my life very quickly and it will never be the same again,” she told the publication. “Now I get to do all of the wonderful, amazing things that I really want to do, and I’m still figuring out what that is.
“Your dreams shouldn’t be coming true at 21 and 22. It shouldn’t be allowed. I still need to f*ck up a bit more – like, I shouldn’t even be unsupervised this young on a day-to-day level.”
Despite saying she wouldn’t return, the Aussie actress made a surprise cameo in Season two, episode three (warning spoilers ahead).
The episode saw Daemon (Matt Smith) plagued by past demon, coming across Milly Alcock as a young Rhaenyra, sewing up the decapitated neck of Aegon’s heir, Jaehaerys, whose execution was seemingly ordered by him in the first episode. Milly’s Rhaenyra tells Daemon, “always coming and going, and I have to clean up afterwards.”
“She had a major impact on the success of the show, and is very beloved with the audience and [I’m] excited for people to be surprised by that,” Showrunner Ryan Condal told The Wrap of Milly’s return. “The biggest challenge was just keeping it secret.”
“We wanted to do it in a way that felt grounded and impactful, not only dramatically to Daemon … because Daemon is literally coming face-to-face with a ghost of his past and having it challenge him for his past sins, but do it in a way that felt realistic in world,” he told the publication.
