The first trailer for the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy movie has dropped confirming the fourth instalment in the franchise will pick up four years after the death of her husband Mark. So no Colin Firth – other than a brief dream sequence or two. Sob.
But dry your tears because Leo Woodall looks set to put a smile on everyone’s face – including our favourite frazzled Englishwoman Bridget. The trailer reveals that Bridget, played once again by Renee Zellweger has been struggling as a single mum and now her friends are urging her to get back on the dating scene, even signing her up to Tinder.
But when she gets stuck up a tree in a park with her children, Woodall, a 29-year-old “tree Adonis” helps save the day and a romance is born.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is set for release in Australia on February 13, 2025. As we count down the days to the release of what is said will be the final instalment in Bridget’s dramatic story, here’s everything you need to know.
Who is cast in the new Bridget Jones movie?
While we now know that other than what looks like a dream sequence, Colin Firth, who played the dashing Mark Darcy is definitely not returning. That will come as no surprise to those who have read the book.
The film obviously sees Renee Zellweger return as our favourite frazzled English woman more than 20 years after she first played her in Bridget Jones’s Diary.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, star of 12 Years a Slave, plays Bridget’s son’s science teacher and another contender for affection.
Academy Award winner Emma Thompson returns as Bridget’s no nonsense doctor.
Is Daniel Cleaver in Mad About the Boy?
Hugh Grant, who plays Daniel Cleaver, is definitely back and from the looks of the trailer he hasn’t given up on wooing Bridget.
“Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she’s soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher.”
As one of the franchise’s original stars, Grant has seen the story of Bridget Jones continue to evolve and based on the script so far, it appears we’re in for another emotional rollercoaster.
“It is very moving as well as funny,” Grant told People, adding that the plot is “partly based on [author]Helen Fielding’s experiences of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died, and so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating.”
The latest instalment of the Bridget Jones universe is based on Helen’s 2013 novel, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy.
When will Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy be released?
The new film will be release in Australia on February 13, 2025, and in the UK on February 14, 2025. So that’s Valentine’s Day sorted.
