Fans around the world won’t ever forget the day in January 2016 when One Direction officially announced they would be going on an indefinite hiatus.
Whilst Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik embarked on solo careers in the years since, fans still hold their breath in the hope that the boys will reunite.
Wishful thinking? Maybe. While there hasn’t been any *official* news surrounding a reunion, the boys themselves have spoken about it on a few separate occasions.
Although it’s clear 1D isn’t reuniting anytime soon, we’re still holding out hope that the boy band will get together once more.
In the meantime, here’s everything the guys have said themselves about a possible reunion!
Niall Horan
Niall sent 1D fans into a frenzy in May 2023 after revealing that a WhatsApp chat between him and his ex-bandmates was “louder” than ever.
“We’ve had three or four group chats,” he shared with E! News.
“Some of them have been more quiet than others. This new one is definitely louder than most, and it’s been great. I’m sure if I had a look at my phone in a few minutes I’d see some messages.”

Harry Styles
Harry has also remained pretty quiet on any possibilities of the band getting back together. “I fear that it’s not a yes or no question,” he told James Corden during an appearance on The Late Late Show.
“I think I would never say never to that. If there was a time when we wanted to do it, I don’t see why we wouldn’t.”
Harry has also been spotted pretty frequently over the last few months hanging out with fellow bandmate Niall Horan. Is this the start of a 1D reunion? A musical collaboration between the duo? Or just two friends hanging out…

Liam Payne
Liam mentioned a One Direction group chat during an interview with Delicious TV in May 2023, but remained quiet on any news of a reunion. When asked specifically about new rumours surrounding the band getting back together his only response was a simple “I don’t know.”
In June 2022 Liam joined Logan Paul for a podcast, where he let slip some interesting details about his time in the band, revealing that it wasn’t quite smooth sailing.
He discussed various arguments and issues within the band and even detailed an incident when he got into a physical altercation with one of his bandmates. When talking about Zayn and Gigi Hadid’s relationship he added that there were “many reasons why I dislike Zayne,” but later took to Twitter to explain that his quotes were taken out of context and that he didn’t articulate his point properly.
Despite his less-than-impressive comments about his time in the band, it looks like Liam still has a good relationship with fellow bandmate Louis Tomlinson. The pair had a mini-reunion at the premiere of Louis’s documentary All of Those Voices in March 2023. He also posted a sweet tribute to Louis on Instagram following the film: “Seeing the world through your eyes last night was the most beautiful thing to experience,” he wrote.
“My neck hurts from how much I’m looking up to you right now you were already my friend and brother but getting to look through that window into your world and mind I just extends that respect I have for you.”
Louis Tomlinson
When asked about the likelihood of a One Direction reunion, Louis told The Sunday Times in early 2023 that “getting back together at some point is hard to imagine right now.”
But don’t despair! The singer added, “I’d be surprised if we lived out our lives and didn’t have a moment where we had a reunion, or whatever you want to call it. I’d be up for that.”
Zayn Malik
Out of all the members, Zayn has remained the most tight-lipped on any news of a reunion – however, it isn’t surprising considering the singer, who left the band before they went on a hiatus, keeps predominantly out of the public eye.
However, the father-of-one sent fans into a frenzy in August 2022 when he shared a video on Instagram singing Night Changes, an old One Direction song.
