The nominations for the 2026 Oscars are here, and while there’s been some major shocks and snubs, the nominees for the biggest category of the night, Best Picture, are set in stone.

Bugonia
Starring: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons
Conspiracy theories are a dangerous game and, in this black comedy from director Yorgos Lanthimos, they’re taken to the next level. Two conspiracy-obsessed men, Teddy (Plemons) and his cousin Don (Halkias), abduct Michelle Fuller (Stone), the powerful CEO of a hugely successful biotech pharmaceutical company, after being convinced she is, in fact, an alien intent on destroying Earth. As Michelle struggles to maintain her sanity throughout the ordeal, the abductors’ delusions deepen. They shave her head, chain her and demand that she lead them to her ‘mothership’ during an approaching lunar eclipse.

Frankenstein
Starring: Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz
The classic Gothic tale by Mary Shelley is making yet another chilling comeback, courtesy of visionary director Guillermo del Toro. In this reimagining, Dr Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a tortured genius with an egotistical streak, pushes the limits of creation to produce a monster (Jacob Elordi) – both literally and figuratively. As his creation grows more intelligent and self-aware, The Creature soon spirals beyond Frankenstein’s control.

Starring: Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kery Condon
Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula One star tempted out of retirement to help revive struggling team APXGP, run by Rubén Cervantes (Bardem). Paired with ambitious rookie Joshua Pearce (Idris), Sonny finds himself in a high-octane clash of generations, egos and ambition as the championship race heats up both on and off the track.

Hamnet
Starring: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, the film follows Agnes Hathaway (Buckley) and William Shakespeare (Mescal) as they navigate family life in 16th-century England after the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. The story focuses on their grief and marriage, and how that loss shapes the world around them.

Marty Supreme
Starring: Timothee Chalamet, Odessa A’Zion, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler The Creator
Marty (Chalamet) is a charismatic, albeit egotistical, young man with big dreams and no patience for his current life as a shoe salesman. Convinced he’s destined for greatness, he becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming the world’s top table tennis player, imagining a future in which he travels the globe earning big bucks with his trusty paddle and customised neon-orange balls. Along the way, he crosses paths with an older, wealthy former Hollywood star (Paltrow) and makes a series of questionable choices in his hustle for fame. Meanwhile, his secret girlfriend (A’Zion) is battling her own crisis at home, desperately trying to escape an abusive husband (Emory Cohen). As Marty pushes harder – and makes increasingly immoral decisions – their lives spiral into chaos, fuelled by his relentless hunger to become someone extraordinary.

One Battle After Another
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn
A disillusioned activist (DiCaprio) living a paranoid and reclusive life off the grid with his spirited daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), is forced to confront his past when a dark figure from his former life resurfaces and his daughter goes missing. To find her, the former radical must re-enter the world he left behind, as both father and daughter face the dangerous consequences of their family’s past actions. The film is set to be director Paul Thomas Anderson’s most expensive yet. (In cinemas Thu., Sep. 25)

The Secret Agent
Starring: Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Udo Kier
Set in Brazil in 1977, the film stars Wagner Moura as Armando, a man forced into hiding during the country’s military dictatorship. Trying to reunite with his young son, he becomes entangled in a web of political surveillance, underground networks and dangerous alliances, as authorities close in and his past threatens to resurface.

Sentimental Value
Starring: Stellan Skarsgard, Elle Fanning, Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas
It follows sisters Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Lilleaas) as they reconnect with their estranged father, Gustav (Skarsgård), a once celebrated film director. Hoping for a comeback, he writes a new project and asks Nora, a stage actress, to star. When she turns him down, he offers the role to an ambitious young Hollywood actor, reigniting old family tensions.

Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton
Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, as they return home hoping for a fresh start. Their plan to open a juke joint quickly unravels when a sinister supernatural force emerges, dragging the local community into danger.

Train Dreams
Starring: Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon
Adapted from Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella, this soulful drama follows Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a labourer whose mundane but extraordinarily tender life unfolds against the backdrop of rapid change in early-20th-century America. Orphaned young, Robert comes of age in the rugged forests of the Pacific Northwest, working to expand the nation’s growing railroads alongside men as resilient as the land itself. After meeting Gladys (Jones) and forming a deep, loving relationship, they marry and start a modest life among the tall pines. However, Robert’s work often drags him away from family time. Filmed against the striking natural landscapes of Washington State, the film shines a light on both the charm and brutality of frontier life, where beauty often resides even within the most mundane settings.
