This week on The Block saw the teams play with fire (literally) as they tackled one of the largest zones of the season — the living, dining and alfresco — on tight budgets.
Fireplaces became a big focus for the teams and were often the source of delays, with Foreman Dan’s requests for early compliance, clearances, and confirmed flue routes going up in smoke.
Speaking of delays, Tayla and Rick from House 5 (who started the week celebrating Rick’s birthday) were the last to decide on their fireplace design, with Tayla’s “dinosaur egg” design being a particular point of contention.
However, there was another detail about this design that caught fans’ attention.
Speaking to WHO, Tayla and Rick unpacked what many viewers are calling a hilarious “X-rated” design.
Why were there delays in Tayla’s fireplace design?
Despite multiple requests from the tradies for her final fireplace design and measurements, Tayla was taking her sweet time, changing her mind about the design she wanted.
The indecision was so dramatic that it led to some of the tradies leaving in a huff because of it — the complete opposite of what you want on a week as big as this one.
“It was really annoying,” Rick told WHO about Tayla’s indecision. “I think it was late Friday afternoon, so we pretty much had only a full day to try and get it finished.”
When the design was finally completed, with Tayla landing on a curved “dinosaur egg” design, Scott Cam warned the contestant that it couldn’t realistically be completed in five days and they opted for something more basic.
‘X-rated fireplace’
However, while Tayla’s delay in the design caused some pain for Rick and the tradies, what caught fans’ attention was another detail entirely, with the design drawings branding it an “X-rated fireplace”.
A viewer took a screenshot of Tayla’s final design, noting that it looked somewhat… phallic.
“So it wasn’t just me who noticed,” another fan cheekily commented in response.
“As soon as this was drawn I was waiting for someone to comment,” a third chimed in.
Many fans called it “hilarious” and made jokes like, “if it’s burning, you should consult a doctor”; other fans called the moment “cringeworthy” and “staged for drama”.
Nevertheless, it turns out people’s sense of humour never really changes, and thank goodness for the light-hearted fun that comes from that!
What did Tayla think of the finished product?
As Rick sighed thinking about the pain Tayla’s delays caused him, Tayla told WHO that she thought the finished product was “beautiful”.
“It’s beautiful,” Tayla said. “It’s a point of difference, and it’s amazing, it’s gorgeous.”
