For sisters Eliza, 37, and Liberty, 34, it was the excitement of getting out of their comfort zones that saw the duo sign up for The Block 2023.
Originally from Adelaide but now both living in Melbourne, the girls admit the monotony of the same daily routine motivated them to take the plunge.
“We are both single, in our mid-thirties, and nothing is holding us back,” Liberty, who is a producer at an advertising agency, shared before starting the competition. “Everything has just aligned.”
So how did the sisters who have no prior renovating experience go on The Block? They surprised everyone, coming in second and taking home $1.05 million!
“We didn’t even contemplate how we would spend that kind of money because we never thought it would be a thing for us,” Liberty told us after the auction. “We don’t know how we would spend that. I think first and foremost we would love to go on holiday…”
“Holiday first, then expensive handbag, then house,” Eliza added. “Will we have enough money left?”
Inside Eliza & Liberty’s Block House
Backyard and Pool
This week, the five couples tackled landscaping. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew and finances getting tight, the teams had a tough week.
With just half a point difference between the top two teams, Steph and Gian took out the win with 38 out of 40 points.
The judges hated Eliza and Liberty’s choice of concrete in the backyard and had harsh thoughts about the furniture choice. Unfortunately, the judge’s critiques didn’t get any more positive and the sisters ended up in last place for their backyard.
The pair were awarded a score of 27 out of 40.
Upstairs Bathroom and Redo Rooms
This week, the five couples tackled not one but two rooms; the upstairs bathroom and a ‘re-do’ of a room of their choice. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew the teams had a tough week. Whilst Eliza and Liberty took out the win, another team was unable to present a finished room.
Eliza and Liberty’s upstairs bathroom was a huge hit with the judges, with positive commentary from Shaynna and Darren. Neale wasn’t a huge fan of the styling, however, the basics of the room ticked all the boxes.
Eliza and Liberty also earned praise from the judges for their transformation of the studio which was disliked by the judges earlier in the season. Although Darren pointed out a few flaws with their layout, it was overall a good effort from the girls!
The pair were awarded a score of 27.5 out of 30.
Kids’ Rooms Week
This week, the five couples tackled not one but two children’s rooms. With drama behind the scenes continuing to brew, the teams had a tough week, but all five ultimately delivered stunning rooms.
Steph and Gian took out the win this week with perfect full marks.
The judges loved the wide appeal of the rooms’ delivered by the girls, believing they could work for any buyer. Their only criticism was issues with the lighting in one bedroom.
The pair were awarded a score of 26.5 out of 30.
Master Ensuite Bathroom Week
This week saw the five couples tackle another difficult space on The Block – the master ensuite bathroom.
Amidst a week of high tension and a lot of drama, both Eliza and Liberty and Kristy and Brett tied in first place.
The judges loved the girl’s master ensuite bathroom – their only critique was the positioning of the face-level storage.
The pair were awarded a score of 28 out of 30.
Kitchen and Laundry week
The seventh week of the season saw the five couples tackle another massive space on The Block – the Kitchen and Laundry.
Eliza and Liberty took out their first win of the season with a near-perfect room, scoring 29 out of 30 points.
The judges loved the bold orange oven and large island bench. With impressive storage and a well-thought-out space, the girls easily took the lead.
The pair were awarded a score of 29 out of 30, but also chose to use their bonus point which rounded out their score to a perfect 30!
Bedroom and walk-in robes
The sixth week of the season saw the five couples tackle another massive space on The Block – the bedroom and walk-in robes.
Steph and Gian ultimately won the week with a near-perfect room, scoring 29 out of 30 points.
Eliza and Liberty’s room was praised by the judges, who loved the artwork choice, contemporary colour palette and abundance of storage. However, the unfinished paint job saw the sisters come in fourth place.
The pair were awarded a score of 23 out of 30.
Living and Dining Room
The fifth week of the season saw the five couples tackle living and dining room week – one of the biggest spaces on The Block.
Leah and Ash ultimately won the week with their bold, unique room.
After a tough few weeks of criticism and low points, the girls came second in this week’s judging. All three judges were impressed with the layout and how much space the room had to offer.
The pair were awarded a score of 27 out of 30.
Down Stairs Bathroom
The fourth week of the season saw the five couples tackle the downstairs bathroom and the competition was close, to say the least.
Leah and Ash ultimately won the week by a nail-biting half a point thanks to the use of their gnome which gave the couple an extra point. Kristy and Brett were close on their heels in second place.
Eliza and Liberty’s Moss Wall was a divisive feature with the judges either hating it or somewhat on the fence about it. Everything else about the room was successful, with the judges praising the room’s functionality.
The pair were awarded a score of 25 out of 30.
Work From Home Space
The third week of the season saw the five couples tackle the work-from-home space and whilst all teams did finish, it was a race to the finish line as wet weather wreaked havoc.
In the end, week three saw Steph and Gian win for the second time in a row! Kyle and Leslie missed out on the top spot by only half a point which is amazing considering they only spent $13,917 in total.
Applauded by the judges for finishing a room despite the last-minute rain damage, Eliza and Liberty’s room had a welcoming feel to it. The judges praised the styling as although there were a few small issues, it was a big step up from last week.
The pair were awarded a score of 22.5 out of 30.
Studio
The second week of the season saw the five couples tackle the granny flat, appropriately re-named the studio. With tense body corporate meetings, alliances forming and drama almost every day, the week was a big one and as judging commenced, it was clear that not every team followed the bride.
Considering Marty said this room had the worst styling, the girls still managed to scrape into third place with their fully self-contained studio. They did however have serious issues with the layout and styling.
The judges slammed the wallpaper, styling and layout, revealing they felt the room wasn’t luxurious enough.
The pair were awarded a score of 21.5 out of 30.
Guest Bathroom
The first week of the season saw the five couples tackle one of the hardest rooms – the bathroom. From demolishing the wrong room, to hiring new builders and even allegations of cheating, the first official week on The Block was full of drama.
But for Eliza and Liberty, the room went smoothly – considering this was the first bathroom they have ever built!
The girls surprised the judges yet again and came third. The feeling of the room was divine, but a few bad placement’s in the design saw a few points knocked off.
The pair were awarded a score of 23 out of 30.
House Decider Challenge
The debut episode of the season saw the five couples compete in a house decider challenge to decide which house they will get for the remainder of the season.
The challenge saw the teams given 48 hours and a budget of $5000 to create a kid’s room based on a Disney+ character.
Eliza and Liberty surprised everyone, including themselves, when they achieved second place in the first competition of the season. For a team that had never renovated before, the judges applauded their well-executed “Groot” themed room.
The sisters were given a score of 18.5 out of 30.
