The Voice Australia is already serving up plenty of drama, with the coaches battling it out to secure some of the season’s biggest voices. But while fans have been loving some of the standout performances, the show hasn’t been without its critics.
The familiar ‘Block’ feature is back this season, giving coaches another way to fight for the artists they want on their teams. And 16-year-old Charlotte Macphail quickly found herself at the centre of the twist after all four coaches turned for her– a moment that she told WHO was “surreal.”
Normally, a contestant in this enviable position would face the very difficult task of choosing which coach to join, but when it came to Charlotte, Melanie C had other plans. The former Spice Girl used her Block to knock the other coaches out of the running, leaving Charlotte with no choice but to join Team Melanie. After all, isn’t that half the fun of The Voice? You know, watching singers agonise over which coach they want in their corner?
While it made for a pretty dramatic Blind Audition, not everyone watching at home is convinced the Block is a good thing.
Fans aren’t happy with The Voice’s ‘Block’ feature
Fans have taken to social media to make their feelings known, with some claiming the Block has taken away from what they loved about the show.
“I have gone off this show because of the blocking feature,” one viewer wrote online.
“I do not agree with blocking. The 5th judge is also ludicrous. So 4 judges have deemed the contestant not good enough to put through and the 5th judge thinks they are! The show has severely declined in entertainment value, the judges are woeful!” another said.
“I watched two episodes. Such a shame, it’s just not the same anymore,” a third fan wrote. And then there was the simple but very clear: “I hate the Blocking feature!!!!”
However, not everyone is against the change. One viewer argued it could stop the strongest coach from continually securing the best contestants.
“I disagree otherwise the strongest judge will keep getting the best contestants. I like Tones being Involved it will hopefully shake It up,” one viewer wrote.
Charlotte reveals what it was like having the coaches fight for her
Speaking to WHO, Charlotte revealed that having all four coaches turn their chairs was something the singer had long dreamed of.
“It honestly meant so much to me because being on The Voice has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I grew up watching the show and imagining what it would feel like to stand on that stage, so having all four chairs turn was something I had pictured for years but never actually thought would happen,” she admitted.
“I was completely overwhelmed in the moment. More than anything, I felt really grateful that all four coaches connected with my performance and wanted me on their team. I felt so lucky and grateful.”
Charlotte also described having the coaches pitch for her as “a really special feeling”.
“I have so much respect for all of the coaches, so hearing them talk about me as an artist and why they wanted me on their team felt so surreal.”
The Block might not be winning everyone over, but for Charlotte, it helped create a moment she’ll never forget.
