If there’s one thing that’s for certain, Rove McManus knows his TV. But when it came to binge-watching during lockdown this year, the TV favourite revealed a surprising series he and wife Tasma Walton became addicted to.
In an exclusive chat with WHO on the AACTA Awards 2020 red carpet, Rove, 46, revealed his favourite shows that he couldn’t get enough of during that period of the year when everyone was staying at home.
“We got through The Leftovers which we hadn’t watched before. I thoroughly enjoyed Tim Minchin’s Upright which was a great show, I can highly recommend that. And I got a little bit obsessed with the octopus teacher documentary – it was weird but interesting,” the TV personality confessed.
However when asked if there had been any guilty pleasures, Rove shared one – but it wasn’t trashy reality or re-runs of Friends.
“I’m still waiting for the ninth and final season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It’s a wonderful series, I highly recommend it, it is incredible,” he said.
“Our daughter got into it and we watched it too and then suddenly we went: ‘This is amazing!’ To the point where sometimes even when she goes to sleep we’ll watch the next episode because it’s so good. Applejack forever, that’s all I’m saying!”
Rove, who attended the film awards ceremony as a host, accompanied his wife Tasma Walton to the television awards section of the night, where she was nominated for her guest role on Mystery Road.
“We’ve both got work to do but in completely opposite ends of the night!” he laughed.
The TV star added that he was happy to see that the awards were going ahead in person following the coronavirus pandemic that saw many of the year’s big events cancelled or shown virtually.
“It’s lucky that the awards were even able to happen, to be honest,” he confessed.
“I’m sure like everyone we assumed that maybe it wasn’t going to happen depending on how things went and it’s great that many of our friends from Melbourne have been able to make it as well because it was looking a bit dire for a bit there.”
Rove began dating Mystery Road actress Tasma in 2007 shortly after the death of his first wife, Belinda Emmett, who lost her battle with breast cancer just 18 months after they wed.
“He’s faced some very big challenges and has come through them with strength and grace,” Tasma said of Rove to the Herald Sun.
In 2009, Rove and Tasma tied the knot in Broome, Western Australia in an intimate ceremony.
“Rove McManus and Tasma Walton are pleased to confirm that they were married on Tuesday June 16 in a private beach ceremony in Broome, Western Australia,” a statement from the couple at the time.
“It was Tasma who proposed to Rove, having first asked his mother for her blessing.”
The couple welcomed daughter Ruby in December 2013 and the proud dad shared his happy news with his social media followers.
“Just after 9am Monday morning, I got this early Christmas present. Her name is Ruby. #daddy,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.
It appears as if Ruby has also inherited her dad’s knack for entertaining.
Speaking to TV WEEK at the 2018 TV WEEK Logie Awards, Rove and Tasma revealed that she’d already developed a sense of humour and “comes out with some corkers.”
“She has a wonderful sense of creative play, which I have a lot of fun with,” proud dad Rove admitted.
