Who’s who in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Your guide to the cast of the upcoming Star Wars spin-off.
Disney

With only a month to go until the latest Star Wars spin-off film hits cinemas, there’s no better time to get up to lightspeed on Solo: A Star Wars Story. Focussing on the adventures of a young Han Solo, the Ron Howard-directed movie is set between Episodes III and IV of the main series, and prior to the events seen in 2016’s Rogue One. Here’s a rundown of the characters we’ll see in Solo:

Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich)

Played by Harrison Ford in Episodes IV to VII, the wise-cracking smuggler is given a detailed backstory that shows how he became the cynical man we meet in A New Hope.

Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo)

Standing over two metres tall, Finnish basketball player and actor Suotamo was the perfect person to take over the role of Han’s sidekick (from original actor Peter Mayhew) in The Force Awakens, and dons the Wookie costume once again to show how the pals met.

Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover)

Played by Billy Dee Williams, this smooth operator betrayed Han and friends in The Empire Strikes Back, but Solo takes us back to the beginning of Lando and Han’s complicated relationship, including that moment when Lando lost his ship, the Millennium Falcon, to Han in a bet.

Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson)

Originally offered to Christian Bale to play, Beckett is Han’s mentor in the criminal world. Their relationship was modelled on that between Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island

Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke)

She might look glamorous, but this childhood friend of Han’s is as much a part of the shady dealings and criminal activity that are rife in the galaxy as he is.

Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany)

Recast due to Michael K Williams’ unavailability once Howard took over the director’s job and extended production on the movie, Dryden Vos is the character who’s most deeply enmeshed in the criminal goings-on. The scarred gangster is Solo‘s main villain.

Val (Thandie Newton)

An offsider of Beckett’s, Val is initially unsure about Han. Little else is know about Val, other than the fact that her relationship with Han goes in an “interesting” direction.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is in cinemas on May 24.
