The UK comedy, which initially ran for three seasons between 2007-2010, previously made a comeback to our screens in 2019 as part of a one-off Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. After ending on a major cliffhanger, with Nessa popping the question to Smithy, fans immediately called for another season of the show and, five years later, Ruth and James confirmed that the cast would be reuniting.

“We’ll have had five years away from it and people still seem so excited, and it’s a real compliment,” Ruth told BBC, adding that she and James were thrilled to share the news of the final script.

“We took a photo in my dressing room at the Dominion Theatre because James is rehearsing for a play… He had to come to my dressing room after rehearsals and took a picture of us with the script and that was literally the first day we were actually able to say, ‘Yes, it’s happening,’ so we told [the public] when we knew for sure.”

How does Gavin and Stacey end?

While we still don’t know exactly how the final episode will pan out, the Season 3 finale and 2019 Christmas special do give us a brief glimpse into what we can expect for the last episode.

In the finale of Season 3, we discover that Stacey is pregnant and Dave and Nessa have called off their wedding after Smithy proclaimed that she didn’t love him, with Dave surprisingly agreeing. Gavin, Stacey, Nessa, and Smithy then set off to Stacey’s hometown of Barry, with the final shot showing a visibly pregnant Stacey alongside her three friends at the beach.

Over a decade later, the 2019 Christmas special tied up a few loose ends, revealing that Gavin and Stacey were now the proud parents of three children. Despite settling into family life, Stacey shared that she was worried her romance with Gavin didn’t have the same spark as the early days of their relationship.

After calling off her wedding, Nessa and Smithy remained close, and in the final minutes of the episode, Nessa confessed that she was in love with Smithy before getting down on one knee to propose to him.
