Courtney and Sev’s journey on The Block may have started off extremely strong, but the two found themselves in hot water (pun intended) this week after the waterproofing in their bathroom failed.
With their usual waterproofers away and the room at risk of not being completed, production stepped in and arranged for the Cursio brothers to help the pair get back on track.
However, the decision quickly caused tension among the contestants, with the other teams questioning whether Courtney and Sev had been given an unfair advantage.
However, the pair have told WHO what was happening behind the scenes when they accepted the additional help.
“There was a lot going on that week,” Courtney admitted. “I was going through a lot.”
Why did Courtney and Sev’s waterproofing fail?
Courtney and Sev’s regular waterproofers were on holiday, leaving the pair to find someone else to complete the work.
“My waterproofers were on holidays, and Sev and I had to engage our tiler, who did the previous bathroom,” Courtney explained.
The tiler had already proven himself to be a valuable member of their team, which made the failure even more difficult for Courtney and Sev to navigate.
“He’s a superstar tiler,” they said.
“The last thing we wanted to do was expose him on television for doing something wrong.”
Rather than simply worrying about how the setback would affect their room, the pair were also concerned about the impact it could have on their tradie’s reputation.
“We were so eaten up over that situation,” they admitted.
With the waterproofing needing to be fixed and the deadline rapidly approaching, Courtney and Sev were left with few options.
Why did The Block bring in the Cursio brothers?
Production eventually brought in the Cursio brothers to help Courtney and Sev recover from the failed waterproofing and continue working towards room reveal.
While the support gave the pair a chance of finishing, they knew accepting it could create problems with the other contestants.
“We were eaten up by the fact that we had to get the Cursios in to help us,” they said.
The decision was particularly uncomfortable because Chantel and Wyatt had apparently warned the pair against accepting their assistance.
“We’d been given instructions from our friends Chantel and Wyatt not to have them,” Courtney and Sev explained.
On top of the failed waterproofing and concern for their tiler, the pair were terrified they still wouldn’t complete the room.
“We were stressed that we weren’t going to finish on time,” they said.
“It was just one thing after another.”
Although the other contestants may have viewed the Cursio brothers’ arrival as an advantage, Courtney and Sev said it came after a string of problems that had left their room in serious trouble.
They explained Channel Nine was forced to step in and help, because if production hadn’t, the setback could have cost thousands, and potentially left one of the rooms unfinished.
While the additional help may have solved their immediate waterproofing problem, it also created an entirely new issue with the teams next door.
The Block airs Monday to Wednesday at 7.30pm and Sundays at 7pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
