Wyatt and Chantel’s The Block journey has been rocky, to say the least. From their confrontation with Scotty Cam to threatening to quit the show, it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing.
But we’re now weeks into the competition, and you would hope the couple had been able to win over viewers with their renovation skills.
Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.
Most recently, Wyatt has faced criticism from fans who have questioned how much work he contributes on site.
However, the couple believe viewers aren’t always being shown an accurate picture of what was happening behind the scenes.
Wyatt and Chantel admitted to WHO it has been “interesting” to watch the episodes back and see how differently certain contestants came across on screen.
“I think it’s been very funny to see how things have played out, especially being on site and witnessing certain people in their natural habitat, and then it not coming across the way they actually are in real life on camera,” they said.
While the couple stopped short of naming names, they suggested the contestants receiving the most criticism may not always be the ones who deserve it.
“It’s interesting to see who’s being villainised, in a sense, when it should be someone else,” they said.
Fans question how much Wyatt contributes on The Block
As the season progresses, some viewers have questioned whether Chantel is carrying more of the workload.
The criticism has largely been based on what fans see during each episode, with Wyatt’s contribution not always receiving the same amount of screen time.
However, the couple’s comments suggest plenty of work and conflict unfolded away from the cameras or simply didn’t make it into the final edit.
After all, contestants spend almost the entire week renovating, while viewers only see a small portion of what happens on site.
For Wyatt and Chantel, watching the finished episodes has shown them just how much someone’s portrayal can differ from their everyday behaviour.
Wyatt and Chantel admit they don’t always recognise themselves
While the couple believe some contestants are being given a much more favourable portrayal than their behind-the-scenes behaviour would suggest, they also acknowledge that their own personalities don’t always translate well on camera.
“Obviously, vice versa, sometimes you’ll see things of us and that may not be our nature, but it comes across on camera that that’s how we are,” they explained.
The pair didn’t offer a specific example of someone whose on-screen portrayal differed from their behaviour on site.
However, their comments make it clear they believe viewers are only seeing part of the story.
At the end of the day, The Block is a reality TV show, and only the scenes that make good television are going to make it to air.
For Wyatt, that may mean the criticism of his contribution doesn’t reflect the full amount of work he completed behind the scenes.
The Block airs Monday to Wednesday at 7.30pm and Sundays at 7pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
