The Block’s Ricky Recard connected with viewers with his humour, quirky style and emotional back story in this season of the popular renovation show.
The Blockhead told cameras that he hasn’t really had a family in “16 years” when giving his back story on the show.
He shared that his family situation meant that he valued his friendship with The Block partner Haydn Wise even more.
But now, Recard’s father, Martin Blennerhasset, has shared his perspective on the story.
“I’m not proud of the night he left,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
As to Recard’s claims on the show that “there were some issues going on at home. Alcohol and domestic violence were pretty rife,” Mr Blennerhasset told Daily Mail, “I want to be clear when I say I have never hit my kids or ever been violent.”
“There was no violence in our household, and as for alcohol – I’d be lucky if I had three beers in a week,” he added.
Recard’s mother, with whom Mr Blennerhasset claimed that Recard had had an argument with the night he left was, “devastated and heartbroken” by her son’s claims.
“She’s pretty fragile at the moment, it’s been a hard time for all of us,” Recard’s father shared.
Recard has reportedly changed his name from Blennerhasset to Recard, which he goes by on the show.
The plumber has two siblings, however, according to Mr Blennerhasset, they don’t have much of a relationship with him.
“Melanie called and introduced herself to Rick on the phone a few weeks ago,” he said.
“I’m very disappointed that Channel Nine didn’t do their due diligence in fact-checking his backstory.”
Recard has yet to address his father’s statements.
This isn’t the first time someone from Recard’s past has spoken to Daily Mail about him.
His ex girlfriend Lauren Smith recently made headlines when she claimed she was “blindsided” by their split after she minded his dogs while he was on the show.
Speaking of Smith’s comments, Recard told Melbourne breakfast show The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick, “I was pretty shocked. I’m shocked when anyone goes to the media about that sort of stuff, that’s not really my style. I don’t have anything bad to say about her.”
